#327 BUDDY (Labradoodle) Forest Rock, AR - Poulsbo, WA
BUDDY #327 a Labradoodle Male 80# 2 y/o finally caught his ride from Arkansas to Washington.  On our board for two months and missing a couple chances for a ride, the shipper Megan’s son drove him from near West Memphis, AR, to Pine Bluff, AR, to meet Driver Scott B.
This was a surprise transport in that Scott does not normally go northwest.  He became an angel to help Buddy get to his new family.  Scott said Buddy would put his paws on the top step of his truck but wouldn’t attempt to jump inside.  Buddy did share Scott’s bed and helped to keep him warm during the trip where they fought rain, snow, and ice to get to Portland, OR.  Buddy’s new family, Richard, a police officer, his wife and son, drove down from near Seattle to get Buddy and take him back to his new home.

I just read info about Buddy, I wanted to send you a picture of him.  Buddy's new owner and I have been emailing for quite sometime, he has gone to a very good home.  Megan is my daughter and my son, Bill was the one who met Scott B the driver.  That day was actually Buddy's 3rd birthday so it was a good day for him.  Buddy was the best dog a person could ever ask for, and Scott was right when he said Buddy would put his paws on the step and not jump in truck, he was that way with me, I had to help him into truck until he learned it was okay to jump in!!! When we return home to the US permanently, I would like to volunteer to help you in way I can.  We live appx. 3 miles from exit 242 on I-40.  Sincerely,Barrie C (Picture to be added)

#326 HAYWOOD (Labrador) Joshua, TX - Brooklyn, NY
HAYWOOD #326, a Golden Lab mix, 30# 7 y/o male became stranded when his truck driver owner, Al W, had to return to NY by bus.   Having heard about us, he called for help. Al had warned that Haywood, an unaltered male, did not like other unaltered males.  This caused a dilemma for Layover Home Sue W as she had two unaltered males at home already in a 10x10 chain link pen.  Efforts to find another Layover Home failed so with trepidation, Sue drove her personal vehicle to Dallas and picked up Haywood to keep until Al could return for him.
Sue had moved the other two dogs, Huck, a Doxi, and Buddy, a mix, to an area under the front porch of her house on long cables.   She put Haywood in the pen and quickly moved to get out…but not quickly enough.  Haywood shot out between her legs.  With a sinking feeling she would have to call Al and tell him his dog was gone, she called and cajoled Haywood until finally he allowed himself to be caught and returned to the pen.
With everything under control now, Sue and her family left to go to her grandson’s basketball game.  Upon returning home, the car lights raked over the pen revealing a problem.  Hurrying over, Sue discovered the gate askew, the top leaning outward, the bottom corner pulled upward, and Haywood gone!  Without a doubt, Al would have to be called.  Huck and Buddy were making quite a racket which they normally do when anyone is around.  Reaching down to unclip Buddy who had gotten himself wrapped around a porch support, Sue nearly tripped over another white dog backing out from under the porch . . . Haywood!
The three dogs were now fast friends and played together over the next three weeks.
On the morning Al returned, Sue bathed Haywood, much to his confusion.  When they arrived at the truck stop, he was curled up on the passenger seat. Al got out of his truck. Sue rolled down the window.  Al began speaking.  Haywood’s head came up, ears listening.  His head cranked around and he looked up into Al’s face.  Haywood moved like lightening, his whole body wiggling; tail wagging.  This was a very satisfying reunion between Master and Dog.  Once out of the car, Haywood made a beeline for Al’s truck wanting inside. He was home and he knew it.

#324 FUNNY BONE (JRT) & #325 YOYO (Pom) Kellyville, OK - Oak Harbor, WA
FUNNY BONE #324 a 1 y/o 10# male Jack Russell Terrier and his buddy YOYO #325 a 1 y/o 7# male Pomeranian were adopted by Driver Larry Long. YOYO joins another Pom, Goober, as a trucking companion to Larry. He reports Yoyo is skittish and still not sure of what is going on. Makes you wonder just what this little one has endured during his short life. Yoyo and Goober quickly bonded and sleep next to each other.
FUNNY BONE is destined as a Christmas gift to Larry’s granddaughter, Gracie 3, in WA. Larry says his well behaves and even sits upon command. It is obvious somebody has worked with him in the past.  He is taking everything in stride although he did try to assert his superior height to Goober. Tiny Goober didn’t go for that at all. Funny Bone learned real quick who was the boss of that truck.
Both were picked up by Driver Rick M in Choteau, OK, after having started their journey with Carol L of Creek Pet Adoption, who drove them in from Kellyville.
Rick delivered both pets to Larry in Dallas, TX, only about five hours after having picked them up. Here was an opportunity for two of our drivers to finally meet after hearing each other’s voices on our conference line. Although this particular truck stop has a no-drop trailer policy, many drivers still do it.  Larry arranged for the tow truck driver to leave one particular flatbed alone. When Rick arrived, the tow-truck driver pulled the flatbed out and Rick backed in. Now that’s courtesy from one driver and convenience for another!

#323 PEANUT (Papillion/Chihuahua) Kirbyville, MO - Chino Valley, AZ

Report from Kris & Brandy:
Peanut is a 5 y/o female Chihuahua/Papillion we picked up on 11/29 in Springfield, MO.  She was going to Chino Valley, AZ.  She was scared and shy.  She would pull on the leash to get away from Brandy and I at first.  It took a while for her to warm up to us but in the end she did just fine.
Peanut had, what I believe to be, orange cleaner in her fur.  She smelled of orange hand cleaner and the fur was gritty.  This may have been an attempt to cover up the bad smell of dirty dog.  Nevertheless, as we were to spend a couple days at our home enroute to AZ, we bathed her to clean her coat.  She did not seem to have to have any ill effects from the cleaner.
We delivered Peanut to her new owner, Dee, and her husband in Mayer, AZ.  They have some land and wanted to adopt a little dog.  They fell in love with peanut’s picture on Petfinder.com.

Report received from Kris & Brandy:

HERE IS THE STORY OF DAISY
Brandy and I picked up Daisy/Misty, a 22 m/o female JRT mix going to Prescott Valley, AZ, from Linda B, in Springfield, MO, on 11/29.  Daisy/Misty was a shy little girl; but, once we got her into the truck, she warmed up just fine.  She took to the truck like she belonged here.
There is a story behind Daisy/Misty.  She once had belonged to the current receiver, having been gifted her from the shipper.  However, through circumstances beyond his control, he had been forced to relinquish her.  Finding her on Petfinder.com sometime later, Richard, the receiver made application and has adopted her again.  We delivered her to Richard V in Mayer, AZ.

#321 ITCHY (Schnauzer) Mesquite, TX - Shoshone, ID
ITCHY # , a 16# male about 5- 6 y/o began his trucking experience in Dallas when his rescuer, Sharold, met Driver Kacey S at one of the local truck stops. He never barked. She said he did howl one time. She looked down at him to see him looking up at her with this look of “I want your attention and I want it now.”
Kacey reports Itchy was the perfect traveler.
Itchy got his unusual name because of a skin problem.  The medicines provided did not work to alleviate the problem.  Kacey thinks it is a lot of bad habit along with some allergies.  She bought him pig ears and some meat flavored bones.  When he was concentrating on them, he never stopped to scratch.

When Kacey arrived in nearby Jerome, Itchy was met by one of his new family members, Luke, the son of his new Mom Deanna.  This was another family to family move.

#320 JASPER (Border Collie) Houston, TX - Sonoma, CA
JASPER #320, now renamed RANDOM, a 2 y/o male 4# Border Collie began his travels in the Houston Humane Society’s kill shelter.  California resident Cynthia S saw his picture on Petfinder.com and moved heaven and earth to get him.
Contacting Operation Roger, Cynthia learned to her dismay most shelters will not co-operate in going out of their way to bring the pet to the driver.  It was suggested she find a rescue in the area to get Jasper/Random out and into a safer environment. She put out an e-mail asking for help.
Help cometh in the strangest of ways.  Norrie C and her mother were in a particular bookstore one day browsing around when a man hollered out “Who in here likes pets?”  Norrie hesitantly lifted her hand.  The man asked “Is that your car out there in the parking lot with pet friendly stickers on it?“  Norrie nodded.  The man said “Follow me,” then turned and walked into an office.  Norrie thought she was in trouble so she and her mother followed.  The man, who turned out to be the bookstore’s owner, went to his computer and printed out an e-mail, handed it to Norrie and said, “This is for you.”  It was Cynthia’s request for help.
Norrie knew immediately she could help.  She went to the shelter to get Jasper/Random and met with resistance until she could prove she was part of a Cocker Spaniel rescue.  Then came the waiting for Operation Roger to get a driver going through Houston.  A driver did materialize but Kathy Y could only get through Arlington, TX.  In stepped Driver Sue W.  Sue drove her personal vehicle from Joshua to Fairfield, TX, where she met Norrie C, and then drove to Arlington where she delivered Jasper/Random to Kathy Y at her receiver.

Following is a report from Driver Kathy Y:
I delivered Jasper/Random on November 29, 1145 pm Sat at Troutdale, OR, at the Flying J truck stop.  He went right to his new “Mom” Cynthia.  She was overjoyed to finally get him. We talked about his and her trip to get him. Jasper came into the Humane Society’s care in Houston, TX, after being picked up with a female border collie, who, unfortunately, was put down due to aggression toward a worker.

Norrie C went to get him out of the shelter but they wouldn’t let him go to her. They said it had to be a rescue group. They released him when she told him she was from the Cocker Spaniel rescue in Houston.  She took him home, then took him to a groomer for a bath.  She told me several beautiful stories of what he did once she had him in her care.

Norrie came up toward to Dallas and met with Sue W.  Sue brought him to me at my receiver.  He was a very active dog and couldn’t wait to get into the truck.  He loved to sit on my knees while I drove.

When it began to snow enroute to Oregon, I thought I wasn’t going to be quick enough to get him to Cynthia.  She was driving up from the Oakland area to meet me in Troutdale, a long, long way; and I didn’t want to have her wait too long for us.  I prayed we would get there as Jasper/Random needs the room to roam which his new home will provide.  These two were meant for each other.

Kathy met up with Team Leaders Kris & Brandy P.  Here is their story:

E-MAIL From Kris & Brandy:
Freckles came out of a home in the Springfield, MO, area and was very scared of everything.  Brandy and I picked up Freckles and his buddy, Posey, from Drive Kathy Y in Fairview, TN.
From the moment Brandy saw Freckles, she fell head over heels in love with him.  She refused to put him down for about a good hour.  Our Poodle, Little Joe, being an experienced foster brother by now, took right to them with no problems.  We spent the night there in Fairview before heading on to Albuquerque, NM, for a stop before heading on to AZ.  Both dogs did fine while in transit.
Unfortunately, while in Albuquerque, after making our delivery, we were forced to take Little Joe to the vet on an emergency basis.  He had become very sick along the way and had stopped eating, not able to keep anything down.  As of this writing, he is really touch and go.  The vet said he may have a twisted bowel which would require a $3,500 operation.  He was put on meds and wet food.  I was told to watch over him for the next two days and time will tell.
After getting out of the vet’s office, we headed to AZ where we met Freckles’ new “Mom,” Kate in Mayer, AZ.
The new momma was very happy to see her new family member.  Kate got very emotional once she saw him.  She had waited over five weeks for her new baby and you could see the relief in her eyes when she took him in her arms.

HOLLEY #317 a 2yr female 50# Spaniel Mix was rescued from a kill shelter and a home was found for her with Sharon and Tom N.
Team Leader Nancy R was heading into San Antonio eastbound when she realized Holley would be on her route.  A quick call to the shipper, VAP Shelter, and the meeting was set to meet Nancy in Brookshire, TX.  A few short hours later and Holley arrived to meet her new family with Tom and Sharon.
Nancy said in her opinion Holley was not a Spaniel but more of a St. Bernard.

#316 SUGAR (Jack Russell Terrier) Honaker, VA - Blue Earth, MN
SUGAR #316 a 3 yr 13# female JRT began her extended trip near Bristol with Driver Chris L.  Chris knew Sugar would need to be on the truck for awhile as she would need to work her way toward the Albert Lea area, which would be the closest she would get.
Plans had been made to meet the receiver, Cindy, near Cedar Rapids, IA, and Sugar would be on her way home.  Oh so we all thought.  Chris got turned around in St. Louis and we couldn’t find a repower for her soon enough.  Then Chris’ truck began having major problems and she was in and out of shops trying to get it fixed.  Several times we thought we had a repower and then it would fall through.
Finally, we got word Driver Rick M was headed toward Atlanta as was Chris.  Determining Chris was 2-3 hours out, Rick waited for her in Cartersville, GA, and the exchange was made.  The good news?  Rick’s load was headed right through Albert Lea, MN, after a stop in Kansas City, MO!
The bad news?  His load was re-powered in Kansas City and it seemed Sugar was once again a trucking dog.  The next day brought good new again as Rick got another load up to Des Moines, IA, where Cindy and her family could meet Rick.  Shortly thereafter, Sugar was in the arms of her new family and on her way to her new furever home.

We said goodbye to a precious furkid today. After being with us for 5 months here in Va, Sugar has left out today with Operation Roger to meet her new family in Blue Earth MN. After nursing her back to health from heart worm infestation, we had become very attached to her. It was an emotional goodbye. Sugar will always hold a special place in my heart. She is going to a wonderful family in MN who already loves her and they haven't even met her yet. That's the only thing that matters. This is why we rescue. Although it is sometimes heart breaking to let them go, we know we must so we can rescue more. We will miss her so much. Sugar loves all people. She will give out kisses to all strangers. That's one of the many thing s that makes her so special. I know in my heart she is going to a great home so why am I crying over her?

WE RECEIVED THIS EMAIL 11-24-11:

Hi Sue, Sugar was brought to us by Chris L and Rick M in November of 2008

She has been such a sweetheart and enjoys being with her fur sister Angel a miniature longhair dachshund.   Thought you would like to hear an update. We now live in Northeastern Tennessee not to far from where she began her journey.  Now in December, we are going to get together for a reunion with Paula and hopefully both daughters from the shelter where Sugar was.
Happy Thanksgiving.
This is Sugar’s latest picture taken just a few weeks ago on the deck.

#315 CHICKABEE (Dachshund/Rottweiller) Rock Rapids, IA - Surprise, AZ
CHICKABEE #315 5 yr 40# female Doxi/Rott was picked up near Sioux Falls, SD, by Driver Jim F.  She had a left knee repair about 18 month ago and the cold weather apparently was telling on her.  The owner, Patricia B, arrange for her son, Brian, to give her a permanent on the warmer weather of AZ.  Jim was headed for KY and thought for sure he would be heading for the desert southwest; but, at it goes with the trucking industry, he went on the East Coast instead.
On the bright side, Jim was able to spend a day or two with his father in FL and Chickabee got to run and play in the yard before getting back on the truck.  Jim had already told us she was doing fine on the truck but he really felt she needed to be on solid ground.  Then Jim got a load going into Canada and we knew we had to get Chickabee off his truck.  As luck would have it, he came right through Ft. Worth and Sue W once again became a LOH.  Chickabee had been on Jim’s truck for two weeks.  Once at Sue’s, it seemed everything dried up.  Chickabee played with the family’s Doxi and Mutt X and pretty much ruled the roost for the next thirteen days.
Team Leader Nancy R came through, picked up Chickabee, and delivered her to Brian B the very next day. Nancy reported Chickabee got up in the passenger seat, whimpered a little, curled up into a ball, and slept. Nancy said she even forgot Chickabee was over there until she had to stop for a nature break and Chickabee decided she did also.

E-MAIL From Susan M
Fri Nov 7th 2008. Drove from Springfield, Mass to Falmouth, Mass. I parked in the ferry parking lot, and caught the bus that takes you to the ferry. Bought a round trip ticket for $15 and hopped on board the ferry to Martha's Vinyard. Was met at the dock by Kim and her sister Ann. The two women were so nice and fun, it's like we were all sisters. Ann drove her car and took me with her sister Kim on a tour of the island. It was a quick tour. We stopped for a quick lunch and Kim paid for my lunch, and she bought me a sweatshirt. We stopped at a few stores and I bought a thick, leather, wool, sheepskin, hand made winter hat that also has a ventilation hole in the top and the sides come down to cover my ears. It's cute. Since I drive a truck in 48 states, this hat will be great in cold winters. Especially windy Wyoming winters!!
After driving around and taking video and photos', we stopped at Kim's house and got her cat Buddha. He is a very cute and sweet cat. We made it back to the dock in time to catch the ferry back to Falmouth.
Once back in my Nissan truck, I drove a short distance to Wareham, Mass and picked up LUKE. A cute and energetic Australian Kelpi Shepherd. He is 8 years old and has energy like a puppy. He was so excited to ride with me and really liked the cat Buddha, who was riding safely in his cage. About midnight I stopped in New Jersey at a Motel 6 and brought both pets in with me.
To keep the cat Buddha safe from the dog Luke, I put Buddha in the bathtub (no water, obviously) and opened his cage to let him wander about the bathroom. I took his litter box out too and placed it near the toilet. I made sure he had enough food and water and then shut the door to let him rest in there. LUKE was running around the hotel room, but stayed near the bathroom door often to sniff the cat. At one point during the night, Luke jumped on my bed and slept at my feet. He would whine a little at wanting to play with the cat, and Buddha meowed a little during the night. I didn't get too much sleep. I slept as much as possible.
I was up at 6:30am, took Luke out to the bathroom, jumped in the shower, then loaded pets and everything in the Nissan and proceeded to drive to the TA Truck Stop in Richmond, Va. I met Theresa and her husband who then took Luke to his new Ranch.  I then waited for Jimmy F and Monique to arrive with Kelly.
I let Buddha out of his cage several times while I had him, on his leash to let him stretch his legs. During the drive to my house in Florida, I let Buddha out to roam around inside the cab of my Nissan truck. Buddha didn't mind the dog, Kelly, and we all got along. I made it to my house, over 1000 miles from New Jersey, at about 1:30am. I was exhausted. I didn't want to spend $60-70 on another hotel and I knew I could make it home with no problems. My strength would hold up. I am a long haul truck driver and used to fatigue and have good endurance.
After Kelly left with his mom, I drove to the house of Carolyn. She is legally blind and could not drive to get her cat. She was reunited with Buddha inside her home. I took alot of photos' of pets and their people and have posted them on myspace, and sent them also to operation rogerphotos@yahoo.com.

#313 KELLY (Peek-A-Poo X) Virginia Beach, VA - Gulfport, FL
KELLY #313, a 12 yr 25# male Peek-A-Poo X, had been left behind when his elderly owner had to move to another state and couldn’t take him.  Instead she left Kelly with Jimmy F who arranged for the woman’s daughter, Larinda, to take him.  As the webmaster for Operation Roger, Jimmy knew exactly who to call.  Providence was with Kelly in the form of Driver Susan M.  Normally, it is very difficult to get any pet moved along the I-95 corridor.  This time Susan was in her personal vehicle returning from a vacation.
She picked up Kelly in Richmond, VA, after Jimmy drove from Virginia Beach to make the delivery.  Kelly joined Buddha whose final destination wasn’t that far from where Kelly would be.  We will let Susan tell her story from here.

In Richmond, VA, I waited for Jimmy F and Monique to arrive with KELLY. He is a 12 yr old Peek-A-Poo dog. He rode well in my Nissan truck and had no interest in the cat.
Once home, I let both Buddha and Kelly run around in my bedroom and bathroom. I put Buddha’s litter box in my bathroom and just let them sleep wherever they felt like sleeping. I fell asleep fast and slept soundly for about 7hours. I then got up, got dressed, loaded up the pets, and drove them in my Nissan pickup truck south to Wildwood, Florida. Where the I-75 meets the Florida Turnpike.
I met Larinda and her friend Susie at the GATE Truck Stop that also has a Steak N Shake restaurant. She picked up her family dog Kelly. She had known the dog since he was a pup. Kelly was very happy to see Larinda and excited to get in her car. They also loaded up the 2 boxes of stuff that came with Kelly. Including his favorite polar bear rug/blanket.

I was up at 6:30am, took Luke out to the bathroom, jumped in the shower, then loaded pets and everything in the Nissan and proceeded to drive to the TA Truck Stop in Richmond, VA. I met Theresa and her husband who then took Luke to his new Ranch.

#311 PAULA (Greyhound) Orlando, FL - York, PA
PAULA #311/STARFIRE a 4 yr 65# female ex-racing Greyhound finally made it to PA.  Drive Susan M had tried to pick up Starfire about a month ago but was unable to take her.  This time, Susan  picked up Paula from Carol near Gainesville, took her to an overnight at her home, and then the two of them drove non-stop in her personal vehicle all the way to York, PA.  The receiver, Judi, graciously offered a bed for Susan for the night.  Just after she had settled down for a much needed rest, Susan was startled by what she called a choir of singing from all the Greyhounds in the house.  It was not barking but a beautiful song.  She believes the other Greyhounds were welcoming Starfire to the fold.
Starfire joins other greyhounds and 3 beautiful kitties belonging to the receiver. According to Susan, the home belongs to the pets and the humans are the guests. All these pets are definitely loved and cared for and pampered. There is one dog who has his own special "doggy door," because he won't use the doggy door the others use.
During the trip, Starfire, an ex-racer sidelined by a broken toe, rode comfortably in the backseat of Susan's extended cab pickup. She was amazed at how Starfire could fold herself up into a small area and thus didn't always take up the entire backseat.
This is just the first of four pets Susan will be transporting while she is on vacation. Her next destination is Martha's Vineyard, MA.

#310 RUSTY (Rhodesian Ridgeback) Kilgore, TX - Independence, MO
RUSTY #310 a 21 mo male 70# Rhodesian Ridgeback was picked up by Driver Scott B near Kilgore.  He had been rescued from a backyard breeder.
Scott was very impressed with Rusty and was certain he had been trained.  Assured by both the shipper and the receiver Rusty had never had obedience lessons, Scott demonstrated to the shipper what he meant.
Most dogs would run ahead when someone they were walking with stopped.  Scott would walk and then stop.  Rusty would stop.  Scott would turn around and Rusty would go around him and stop.  Much to everyone’s surprise, Rusty even ignored a rabbit when it jumped up in front of him.
Rusty’s new “Parents” Kenneth and Linda M were very excited to see Rusty looked just like their Ridgeback who had died of cancer.
Scott reported Rusty was mellow with excellent behavior.  During the trip, Rusty lay on the floor and refused to get on the bed.

#308 MIKO PANDA & #309 TSUKI (Japanese Chinese Crested) Ballenger, TX - Orlando, FL
MIKO PANDA #308 and his buddy  TSUKI #309, both 1 y/o, males, weighing 12# were picked up by Driver Nancy R in
Tye, TX, from foster mom Dixie M, who had driven them up from Ballenger. MIKO PANDA was outgoing and tended to stick his nose in everything to investigate. He has an underbite which would make a bulldog jealous according to Nancy.
Just before they were delivered, MIKO PANDA was demanding (by barking) to get into Nancy's lap. Her co-driver Mike yelled Shut Up. MIKO PANDA turned around and glared at him as if to say "You told ME to shut up???"
TSUKI was shy and scared of his own shadow according to Nancy. However, he was the lover, always wanting to give kisses and to be held and loved.
The were delivered to their new family Gregg & Johnnie M and their teenage daughter, Kaylin, in Wildwood, FL. Johnnie is said to have said she was so exited she felt like she's expecting twins, and like with any twins, she had no idea when they would arrive!

#307 MARY (Great Pyrenees) Waco, TX - Hartland, WI
MARY #307 a 3 yr female 65# Great Pyrenees apparently has had a hard life up to now.  Rescued by the Waco Humane Society after having been found tied up and left without food for about a month, she should have weighed about 140# (the vet’s health certificate from the day of transport indicated only 57#).
On Thursday night during a Team Leader meeting, it was discovered Team Leaders Kris & Brandy P were to deliver their load in Garland, TX, the next morning and were scheduled to reload around noon going up to the MN/WI border.  The Humane Society didn’t open until 10 a.m. and Mary didn’t have her health certificate.
That Friday morning was hectic as Sue W made calls to the receiver for help and calls to the HS before opening time.  Everyone scrambled to get Mary’s documents and a ride up to Kris and Brandy before they reloaded.  This was a ride Mary needed to get to her new rescue that could help her get back up to good health again.
Sue W drove down from Joshua to Hillsboro to meet with the veterinarian, Dr. Brunson, herself who had driven Mary up from Waco.  Then Sue drove all the way up to Garland to meet the drivers at their shipper.  Providence was with Mary as the reload for Kris & Brandy and their little Poodle, Little Joe, had been delayed.
Kris reported Mary would look at him with her big brown eyes with such desperation she touched his heart.  Mary met her new rescue “Mom” Lori in Tomah, WI, and they proceeded on to Hartland, WI.
Also, the Waco Humane Society was a delight to work with.  Again proving there are some who do care for the welfare of the pets and are willing to do what it takes to help them get on to better homes.

#305 PIECES (Tabby Cat) & #306 DAISY (Black Lab) Chino Valley, AZ - Mt. Pleasant, IA
PIECES #305 a 3 yr 7# female Tabby Cat and her buddy DAISY #306 3 yr 40# female Black Lab have finally made their way to a big reunion with their “Mom” Sue, who had to leave them behind in Chino Valley when she rushed to the aid of her son in Mt. Pleasant, IA. We tried on several occasions over the months to pick them up but were thwarted each time for various reasons - both shippers and ours. As time went on we despaired of being able to help even though the shippers stayed with us.

We learned the two needed to travel together as Daisy gets upset without her
“Mom” but is manageable when Pieces is around. Talk about being buddies. This caused some delay as a couple possible transports didn’t gel because the drivers were allergic to cats. Then two of our drivers, Kathy Y and Nancy R, were both headed through the area, one after the other, and could have picked them up but the shipper didn’t have a health certificate for one of the pets; so they lost both rides.

Nancy worked hard to put together a repower with drivers from Krystals4Wheelers out of the Dallas, TX, area toward St. Louis, MO. But, even that didn’t work out in time. The next attempt was to get Pieces and Daisy down to Tucson where they could be flown out by a pilot with Pilots&Paws. That fell though when the pilot's plane broke down and he had to fly commercial to Tucson for his meeting.

Then, finally, Team Leader Nancy R picked up Pieces & Daisy in Flagstaff, AZ. She transferred them to Driver Jay McKenzie and his wife, Adel, in Oklahoma City, OK, the next day. They served as a Layover Home over the weekend. Adel M then took them with her on her regular route through Kellyville, OK, to a Layover Home with Carol Lawrence of Creek Pet Adoption who kept the duo until the following weekend.

Krystals4Wheelers group then pitched in. Penny L met Carol in Kellyville and took them to Dale Ann and Samantha in Tulsa. These two ladies then drove to Vinita, OK where they met Paula and her family (daughters and husband). They in turn drove from Vinita to Carthage, MO, for a pit stop, and for Daisy to run around a bit in their fenced yard and blow off some steam. They then dropped off another rescue kitty passenger and then continued on to Bethany, MO, with Pieces and Daisy. Josh W and a friend drove from Bethany, MO, to Ottumwa, IA. There Pieces and Daisy were reunited with their “Mom” Sue and a relative who picked up the two travelers and drove on home to Mt. Pleasant, IA.

#303 CANTON (Border Collie) Arlington, TX - Chardon, OH
CANTON #303 a 10 mo 35# female Border Collie’s owner, Brian, has traveled so much lately he felt he could not properly take care of Canton.  His mother, Robin, agreed to keep Canton.  A couple tries were made to pick up Canton before Team Supervisor Kathy Y arranged for Brian and Canton to meet her in Garland.  Repowered a few days later with Steve M in Effingham, IL, Canton was safely delivered near Cambridge, OH, to Robin S who had driven down from Chardon, OH.
Despite having his own bones and toys, which he ignored, Canton instead found pleasure in tearing up some paper plates and towels Steve had on the bed. Much to Steve's displeasure. Kathy said Canton was all black with a small amount of other markings. Canton, said to be a Border Collie mix when Brian saved her from a Dallas kill shelter, walked and held herself like a GSD.

#302 LUCY (Rhodesian Ridgeback) Kilgore, TX - San Bernardino, CA

Nancy fell in love with Lucy. She had two specific antidotes to tell.  Lucy jumped upon David’s glass top coffee table, crossed her front paws and looked back as if she were dancing. Another one was while enroute, Nancy put her truck into a truck wash. When a truck goes into a wash bay, the attendants start spraying the water while the truck is still rolling in.  Then they stop to let the driver out.  When Nancy tried to get Lucy out of the truck with the thought of taking her into the building, Lucy dug her paws in and wouldn't come out. Nancy didn't know the breed does not like water, period.

E-MAIL FROM DRIVER:

  ABOUT MISS LUCY'S JOURNEY;

SHE IS A SWEETHEART! MET LARRY, THE SHIPPER CELIA'S HUSBAND, IN KILGORE,TX AT 5P.M. CT AT A LITTLE T/S ON SATURDAY 10/4/08. {1st PIC- MAN IN OVERHAULS} WHEN SHE 1st SAW ME SHE WENT A BARKING & GROWLING. I LET HER SNIFF MY HAND THAN SHE LICKED IT & THINGS WERE FINE FROM THERE. MY CO-DRIVER WAS STANDING BY THE TRK & SHE WENT RIGHT TO HIM, SNIFFED, LICKED & LIKED. SHE GAVE US HER APPROVAL.

SHE SETTLED IN NICELY AFTER SNIFFING EVERY INCH OF THE TRK. HER & I SPENT THE DAY GETTING TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER AND SNOOZING THE NIGHT AWAY. {SHE IS A GIANT BED-HOG!!!} THE NEXT MORNING IT WAS MY TIME TO DRIVE. WELL, SHE DID NOT WANT ANY OF THAT.
SHE GOT UP IN MY FACE, AS TO SAY 'HEY, I WANT YOUR UN-DIVIDED ATTENTION'.  AS SHE PROCEEDED TO PAW & DIG HER CLAWS INTO MY ARM & HEAD, SHE REFUSED TO LEAVE MY SIDE. TRYING LIKE HECK TO GET BETWEEN ME & THE STEERING WHEEL, SHE DECIDED LAYING ON MY FEET SO I COULDN'T GET TO THE PEDALS WAS THE SOLUTION TO HER PROBLEM. NOT! OUT CAME A LEASH & WE ENDED UP HAVING TO TIE HER TO THE VENT WINDOW HANDLE TO KEEP HER IN THE SLEEPER. WE ALSO HAD TO PUT A BLANKET ACROSS THE SEATS TO BLOCK HER VIEW OF ME. FINALLY SHE SETTLED DOWN & NAPPED WITH MICHAEL. THINGS WERE FINE AFTER SHE SPENT SOME TIME WITH HIM & DECIDE WE BOTH WERE O.K. TO BE WITH.

THAT EVENING MICHAEL WENT INTO THE T/S & WE STAYED IN THE SLEEPER. WHEN HE CAME BACK & OPENED THE DOOR, SHE WENT BALLISTIC!!! I HAD TO WRAP MY LEGS AROUND HER BODY & HOLD BOTH COLLARS WITH BOTH HANDS TO KEEP HER FROM LUNGING AFTER HIM. NEEDLESS TO SAY, HE STOPPED IN HIS TRACKS & EXTENDED HIS HAND OUT TO BE RE-SNIFFED FOR APPROVAL TO ENTER. PERMISSION WAS GRANTED. SHE THEN WENT RIGHT TO HIM WITH KISSES AS TO SAY 'SORRY FOR THE SCARE. JUST DOING MY JOB.'

ON SUNDAY WE STOPPED TO GET THE TK WASHED IN PHOENIX. NOW RIDGEBACKS HATE WATER.
I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS TILL I GOT HER. WHEN IT WAS OUR TURN I HOOKED HER UP TO THE LEASH, JUMPED OUT & PULLED ON THE LEASH TO HAVE HER FOLLOW. YHEA RIGHT! NO GO. SHE DUG IN & PUT UP A FIGHT TO THE DEATH. WE BOTH TRIED PULLING HER OUT & IT WASN'T HAPPENING. SO I LIFTED HER IN THE DRIVERS SEAT. WELL, WHEN THE WATER FIRST HIT THE WINDOW, SHE JUMPED FROM THE SEAT TO THE BED WITHOUT TOUCHING THE FLOOR & THERE SHE STAYED TILL I WENT TO PULL OUT. ON THE BED SHAKING LIKE A LEAF. WE PARKED TO TAKE A SHOWER. DOGS ARE ALLOWED INSIDE AT DANNY'S [BIG RIG RESORT] SO SHE WENT INTO THE SHOWER WITH ME.[ SHE TRIED TO DRINK THE TOILET DRY.] SHE SAT AT THE SHOWER OPENING LOOKING IN BUT WOULDN'T GET IN. AFTER I GOT OUT SHE WALK INTO THE STALL, LICKED
THE WALLS SOME, SNIFFED IT OUT & STOOD IN THE OPENING TILL I WAS DONE. SHE WAS A BIG HIT WITH EVERYONE WHO SAW HER THERE. BUT SHE HAD 'SELECTED BARKING' AT A CERTAIN FEW WHO WENT BY. THE OFFICE STAFF [EXCEPT 1 GRUMPY LADY] LOVED HER TOO.

SUNDAY EVENING WE MET JANAY WILK [ AREA RIDGEBACK RESCUE COORDINATOR] AT 3 SISTERS T/S IN FONTANA FOR THE HAND OFF. AFTER A BIT, SHE & I WERE OFF TO HER NEW DADDY'S [DAVE PIC#4] HOME IN SAN BERNADINO. HE WAS SO HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE HER THERE. SHE MET HIS 3 OTHER MALE DOGGIES RANGING IN AGE FROM A 7MO PIT PUP, 1 1/2 YR OLD BIJON TO A OLDER LONG HAIRED GR. SHEPARD. ALL WERE HAPPY TO MEET HER. EXCEPT THE OLD GUY. HE WAS NOT TO HAPPY HAVING TO SHARE DAD WITH YET ANOTHER DOG. WE WENT INSIDE TO LET HER SNIFF IT OUT & IN HIS LIVING ROOM HE HAS A COFFEE TABLE THAT MISS LUCY THOUGH WAS HER STAGE. SHE JUMPED UP ON IT & BEGAN TO DANCE A LITTLE. WE ALL LAUGH SAYING SHE WAS DOING A TABLE DANCE FOR HER NEW DADDY. [PIC #3]. WHEN WE LEFT, SHE JUMPED THE GATE & RAN AFTER US UNBEKNOWSTED TO US. BUT SHE CAME RIGHT TO DAVE WHEN HE & THE 1 1/2 YR OLD WALKED DOWN THE STREET AFTER HER. SHE IS SETTLING IN WELL & DAVE IS VERY HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE HER HOME. OBEDIENCE CLASSES START THIS MONTH [OCT]. I LIFTED KNOWING SHE WAS AT HER FINAL HOME WITH A MAN WHO'LL LOVE HER FOREVER.  LOVE YOU LUCY. I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

***********

Follow up: Lucy could not stay with David due to aggression toward cats and too strong for him to control when a cat was in the area.  Janay with the Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue took her to a meet and greet event in San Bernardino. A family from San Diego, who has an avocado farm of 5 acres, adopted her on the spot. She has 2 of the 5 acres in which to run. She did test positive for heart worms but is under treatment with the University of California at Davis campus and her prognosis is very good. She goes on walks everyday with another Ridgeback and is also enrolled in advance obedience classes to protect the family's 3 y/o daughter.
Sounds like a happy ending after all.

ZEUS #301 a 60# 2 yr male Pit Bull was picked up in Reno from Marc, Nevada HS.  Although the actual destination for Zeus was the Denver area, Zeus’ new Dad, Roger, met them in Cheyenne, WY, because he thought it would be better.  While we do want the actual city listed on the application, and Zeus could have missed a ride with a driver going through Denver and not Cheyenne, it worked out this time.
While we were warned Zeus gets very hyper in vehicles, Steve didn’t find him to be so.  In fact, he didn't want to let Zeus go. Steve calling his Team Supervisor Kathy Y asking "Do I have to give him up." Steve said it gave him a good feeling to help Zeus. #298 GUNNY (German Shepherd) Rapid City, SD - Ft. Walton Beach, FL
GUNNY #298 a 75# 5.6 y/o male GSD has been reunited with his owner, David.  When his application came in, the location at a military base in SD made his transport very unlikely; complicated by his foster facing deployment overseas in less than three weeks.  Tentative arrangements were made with a WY Layover Home to take Gunny.  It would have required a two hour trip by both parties to meet in the middle and the soldier couldn’t cut loose to arrange it.
During a call with Driver Susan M, Sue W asked her normal questions of Where Are You? and Where Are You Going?  Susan’s answer - Rapid City, SD, for the next day.  Talk about going into action.  A vet appointment for Gunny was originally scheduled for two days away.  A frantic call to the vet upped that date to the next day.  Susan was, thankfully, able to wait and picked up Gunny about noon.
Susan had to work her way to Florida with Gunny and reports the reunion with his master, David, was wonderful.

#296 HAZEL (Jack Russell Terrier) Hamilton, CN - San Fernando, CA
HAZEL #296 a JRT 3.7 y/o 20# female has quite a story to tell starting in about April 2008.  It seems she left England with a man who wasn’t her owner.  Once she arrived in Canada, she was passed on to two other people who agreed to help the man out by fostering his dog.  During this time, the true owner, Jane C, put Hazel on our Pet Board.  When we tried to pick her up, we discovered Hazel was missing in action.  Frantically, Jane made numerous overseas calls to locate her pet.  After about two weeks she told us where Hazel was staying.
As we have no drivers currently going into the Toronto area on a regular basis, we were despaired of being able to help as the party who had Hazel was reluctant to drive her over into Buffalo, NY, to meet a driver.  One morning, Driver Mark S called in saying he was near Toronto and asked if there was anything he could pick up.  Was there ever!!   After many phone calls, Mark picked up Hazel the next day.
The story is:  In June a man walked into a pet store where a young vet student, Laura, worked.  He asked her if she would keep his dog for two weeks while he returned to England.  He promised he would be back.  He never returned.  When Operation Roger started calling two months later, her mother, Diana, didn’t know who we were and wasn’t about to just give Hazel to anyone.  Smart move.  Once she was satisfied we were legit and what was happening, they brought Hazel to Mark and he headed south.
Now Mark doesn’t run west.  He was willing to take on getting Hazel out of Canada but how to get her on to California was the next problem.  Mark S took her to Driver Sue W in Joshua, TX, who acted as a Layover Home waiting on another driver to go west through Ft. Worth.
In August, Sue and Hazel were featured in a photo shoot for American Profile-Texas Profile. Jane said Hazel is on an important mission by going to CA to help in the project to rescue children around the world who are victims of severe fire burns. Hazel's part in the project is to remind everyone that when there is a fire burn victim, e-mail their name, place, and date of birth, plus a photo, even from camera phones, to
fireburnhotline@aol.com. This article, highlighting Operation Roger, came out in late November 08, showed a picture of Hazel and Sue but said nothing about her mission.  But, we just did above.
Driver Nancy R came through Fort Worth, picked up Hazel, and delivered her safely to Alison, a dear friend of Jane’s, who owns Hazel’s mother.  Nancy reports Hazel recognized Alison and was so happy there was not a part of her little body that was not wiggling.  Now, the next surprise for Hazel will be the reunion with Jane when she is able to move to California.

VENI/MARTINI loved the truck and actually didn't want to leave it or Scott.
At one point in the transport Scott put VENI inside a fenced area to let him run yet VENI stayed right by Scott's side. Veni had a hole in his mouth which caused a sinus problem and had bad teeth as the result. His new family took him to the vet and got the hole and teeth repaired.

From:

We are happy to announce the addition of Zen to our household.  Well,
actually, John and I are happy, and Brie is still assessing the
situation.  After the last foster sheepdog left, she thought she had
successfully trained us in her preference for siblings -- she must be
treated as the "Princess of Everything" at all times.
Zen is a very big boy, 16 months old.  His behavior was fine tuned by
his foster mom, Nancy Hakala in Minnesota and he is a sweet and loving
boy  His journey from Minnesota to Connecticut was facilitated by
Operation Roger, a volunteer organization of truckers, who pick up
rescue dogs in one part of the country and take them to another (check
them out at
www.operationroger.com ).  Zen traveled with Kathy and her
personal two small dogs and got to stay in her living quarters on the
truck.  Kathy hauls giant loads of ice cream, Ben and Jerry's,
Good
Humor
, Blue Bunny, Schwan's, YUM.
During his first week on the truck, Zen participated in a truckers
jamboree in Iowa.  Operation Roger had a display booth at the event and
Zen was a "spokesmodel".  He was very well behaved and was doted on by
everyone who met him.  Zen's transport East was dependent on what loads
Kathy was assigned, after all, her job comes first.  Kathy phoned Nancy
and me every day with a status report on Zen.  So about two weeks after
he left MN, Zen was due to arrive in southern NJ.  Kathy thought she
might get a load assigned that would take her closer to CT, but we were
so anxious to meet Zen, we picked him up in Millville NJ.
So Zen has been here for two days.  Unfortunately it has been raining
almost constantly, so we haven't had the opportunity to show him the
sights.  We did lose power yesterday for 12 hrs. during a horrific
thunder and lightning storm -- Zen didn't mind.  So Zen and Brie (the
resident Princess) are working out their positions in the family.  Zen
is already used to living with a deaf sheepie, so he may realize that
Brie is bi-lateral deaf.  Zen has met the 4 parrots and is interested
but not in an obsessive way -- he did poke cranky Ali Macaw with his
nose in a play gesture and he's lucky to have avoided a bite.
We are a very happy family and are delighted with Zen's personality and
behavior.  Thanks to everyone involved in helping this adoption to
happen!
I hope you can view and enjoy the attached collage.

By the way, did I mention this guy is the size of a pony?

#285 JUPITER (Great Dane) Ft. Worth, TX - Norco, CA
JUPITER #285, a male 2-3 y/o Great Dane weighing only 100# had been found wandering the streets of Ft. Worth.
Once it was determined he was chipped and the original rescue located, the task of getting him back ensued.  Driver Sue W and her granddaughter, Aubrey, went to the shelter to get him.

As this was the first time the 15 y/o had helped in a transport, Aubrey was at first taken back by the size of Jupiter.  He came up to about her hips, with his large head about to her waist.  White he was large in size, he was literally skin and bones, very under weight.  However, Jupiter won her over very quickly and they became nearly insepartable. Once he was comfortable in the back seat of the pickup, they hightailed it to Austin where they were to meet with a rescue from San Antonio who would keep him until he could be transported west.

While they waited on the other party, Aubrey and Jupiter caused quite a stir among the people who walked along the path which ran along the lake.  Aubrey got comments like, "got a saddle?" Jupiter and Aubrey walked in the water along the boat ramp and a couple of time, Aubrey had to grab hold of Jupiter to keep from falling into the lake.  Jupiter took everything in stride.  Tried as she did, Aubrey couldn't convince her mother to let her keep Jupiter.

#284 DOUIE (Malti-Poo) Joshua, TX - Candler, FL
DOUIE, a senior 11 y/o Malti-Poo 10# male has had quite a life the past year.  Adopted by Driver Sue W in Nashville, TN, in April 07 at the TN Truck Show during Operation Roger’s Pet Adoption Day from Russell Rescue, Douie became the trucking companion of Sue and Louie, another 11 y/o Malti-Poo.
In March 08 Sue became ill on the road and had to be taken to the ER.  Operation Roger driver Tony H stepped in and arranged for a local rescue to get Douie and Louie from Sue’s truck and put in “jail.”  Well, that’s the term Tony used.  They were put into a cage, of course.
A month following that, Sue was injured on the job and both Douie and Louie were picked up by Driver Susan M in Illinois.  They rode around with her until they all reached Susan’s home in FL.  Once Sue was at home in TX, the duo were returned to her by other Operation Roger drivers.
Unable to have them in her younger daughter’s home due to allergies by the children and daughter, the duo were housed with Sue’s older daughter for about three weeks.  While there, their Pug/German Shorthaired Pointer pup gave both dogs a hard time to the point there was concern for their safety.  Arrangements were made to send them both to a sanctuary in Florida to live out the rest of their lives.
When it came time for Sue, her daughter and family to travel to ME for the wedding of Sue’s oldest granddaughter, it was necessary to put both Douie and Louie in a veterinarian’s boarding facilities.  A vet had already told Sue Louie’s heart conditions was getting worse.  It was extremely hard to leave them but she had no choice.  When Sue returned about 10 days later, she learned Louie has passed over the Rainbow Bridge two nights before.
Douie was picked up by Driver Susan M in Fort Worth the next day and again traveled with her until they reached her home in FL.  Once at the sanctuary in Candler, Douie was totally happy.  A neighbor lady would come over the help in the sanctuary and fell in love with Douie, and apparently he with her.  Every time she would come over, she would go right to him.  Finally, Sue was called to see if she had any problems with him being adopted by this lady.  Hearing he would be very well taken care of, and knowing it was just what he needed, she quickly agreed.
While he tolerated the truck quite well, even being the first of the two to want back inside, his deafness and arthritis seemed to be getting worse.

#283 TACO (Chihuahua) Cincinnati, OH - Aldergrove, BC, Canada

TACO #283 , a 2-3 y/o male 12# Chihuahua was picked up near Cincinnati by driver Josh Wernick on 5/17/08. Taco had been attacked by another dog, stuffed into a cat carrier and dumped before being rescued.
The rescuer, Linda W, needed to get him out of danger. Josh, who lives near Columbus, OH, agreed to foster Taco until another driver could be found to repower him on out to Seattle. Josh pu Taco 5/17/08 in Cincinnati, OH. On 5-29-08 Josh took to Taco to a Layover Home with Cynthia Stout. On 6-18-08 Taco was repowered with Kathy Young who in turn, on 6-20-08, repowered with Nancy Regan.
While with Nancy, Taco became the poster dog in Louisiana during a hurricane prepardness drill. While there a lady in NH fell in love with him.
The Shipper-Rescue became alarmed OR was unable to get Taco to Canada. Nancy remembered the lady from NH and the Rescue decided to rehome Taco in NH on 7-8-08.

ANDY #282 an 18 mo, 16# male.  Rescuer Penny R brought Andy down from Topeka to meet driver Chris L in Ottawa, KS.  Andy was a puppy mill rescue.  He was naturally afraid of the truck at first.  By the second day he was running around when Chris took him out to potty.  His tail wasn't between his legs and he wasn't as intimidated by the noise of trucks around him.

While she drove, Chris would reach down to pet Andy to reassure him.  He thought she was playing and would chew on her hand.  Andy and Chris' pet, Two Shot, would snuggle up in the bunk with her and go right to sleep.  Andy arrived in Allentown, PA, and met his new family, Carrie S and Wendy H, who then transported him to York, ME.

ALEX DUGGIT #275, a tiny male 2 m/o 4# Dachshund had quite a send off in Bull Head City, AZ. Veterinarian Blynn B, his former owner, took him to the elementary school to meet driver Jonathan S who was meeting with his Trucker Buddy Class on the last day of school.
Apparently, all the commotion caused other classes to be inquisitive and the school principal decided to allow everyone to participate by calling an assembly. Jonathan was able to share with all the students about the Trucker Buddy program and also about Operation Roger.
The shipper, Blynn, and the receiver, Dale, apparently had found each other on-line as former Vietnam vets. Blynn gifted his fellow soldier with Alex Duggit.
After seeing quite a bit of the U.S. on his trip, Alex Duggit was finally delivered to his new Dad near Milton, WV. Seems also Jonathan took quite a liking to this little pup and his breed.

We picked Hanna & Kylie up from Brian at the TA East in Ontario, Ca.,  Hanna is a Yellow Lab/Shepard & Kylie is a Golden Retriever.  Brian is the young man in the photo with Miles. They came with food, toys, blankets & paperwork.  Hanna rode like a dream.  She picked her spot on the blanket & didn't bother anybody until she had to go out.  Kylie on the other hand, was everywhere.  She layed on the bed with me really well, but when I had to drive she wanted to be under my feet--never mind I couldn't get to the pedals.  We have a toilet in our truck & when I was stepping up into the little room--she came between my legs & sat herself up on the bag of dirty clothes.  I had to put my feet up on the wall so Miles could get her out.  The two of us did not fit in there at all.  Finially we put a piece of rope thru the loop on her collar so she actually thought she was tied to something so she layed on the bed with Miles the whole night.  Jennifer met us at the Speedway at exit 79 by Columbus, Oh, & everybody was really happy to be back together again.

ASHLEY #271, a female, 58#, 2.7 y/o Greyhound suffered a career ending broken toe on her right foot during a race. These type of injuries used to call for the dog being pts. Now, however, these injured racers are being adopted by loving families. She was picked up in Lakeland, FL taken to Havre de Grace, MD, to meet her new foster.
Ashley was an excellent rider, calm, got along great with driver Kathy Y's own pets. She wanted to play, especially when Kathy's poodle wanted to run. So did Ashley. However, Kathy herself just wasn't up to running 40 mph.

At one point on the trip, Kathy began vacuuming her truck and discovered Ashley was terrified of the noise. Kathy talked to her and got Ashley to somewhat accept the noise. Kathy also said Ashley took the whole bed while she was relegated to a corner of her own bunk. Such sacrifices OR drivers do for these pets.

Ashley went to a halfway house and is scheduled to attend a Meet and Greet function May 24-25 to introduce her to potential families.

Biscuit #270, a 50# 6 y/o female Walker Hound began her trip with Marcy D of the Orange County Animal Shelter who drove her all the way to Wythville, VA, to meet driver Jayne P.

Jayne reports Biscuit, now renamed Chloe, was unsure of everything all first, which is normal, but quickly made herself at home with two playmates, Milo, a Cocker-Pug-Shar Pei X, and Lucky, a DLH Cat.

Jayne ran into a problem enroute when her company told her she would need to repower her load in Salt Lake City if she was to get home in time for her niece's high school graduation as the freight out of Oregon was slim. Torn, Jayne talked to her niece who told her she thought what Jayne was doing was much more important and she should go ahead and deliver Chloe.

When they arrived in Troutdale, OR, they were met by Chloe's new mistress, Jordan and her family. They learned Chloe was a belated birthday gift to Jordan, which made the sacrifice even more sweet for Jayne.

#269 SALYE (Chow Chow) Kellyville, OK - Bath, PA

Salye #269 , a 35# female 1 y/o Chow Chow was in the right place at the right time to be picked up quickly from her rescuer, Carol L, by team drivers Miles & B.J. F.

B.J., who loves Chows, was very anxious to get Salye on board. The plan was to find a repower with another driver as the team was not going directly to Salye's destination. However, the repower fell through when it was discovered Salye was dog aggressive and the other driver already had his own pet plus a transport on board. The team decided to keep Salye and work their way up to Pennsylvania unless another driver without a pet could be found.

In stepped driver Glenn W who repowered Salye in Tulsa, OK, on Miles & B.J.'s trip back west. Plans were to deliver her to her new family in Harrisburg, PA, Monday morning. Again, Salye hit a snag when it was learned they could not meet with the driver. Arrangements were made to re-repower Salye with Miles and B.J. back in Tulsa. Then late Monday, before he left the general area, Glenn had a call Rosanne M and family would be able to meet them about half way between Harrisburg and Allentown at the truck stop at Midway. To do this, Glenn drove about 120 miles out of route. Not something a driver is normally willing or able to do. Thanks Glenn.

Injured on the job in Illinois and unable to travel home with her two companions, driver Susan M picked up the duo. They traveled to Florida where Susan took care of them during her off-time.

Susan then drove four hours to hand them off to team drivers Miles & B.J. F who took them on to Baytown, TX, to meet driver Jim B, who kept them until he went back on the road. Unable to get directly toward Joshua, Jim and his new traveling companion traveled east before finally arriving in Wilmer, TX, to meet Sue. The plan was for Sue, who had to attend the funeral of a family member that day in Wichita Falls, TX, to meet Jim later that night.

However ... her daughter's car lost its transmission, stranding both of them until Sue's brother, two nephews, and a grand-nephew arrived like the calvary to save the day. Sue's brother took both of them home to Joshua, leaving the car. Jim had to return home with both dogs. Sue and her daughter drove down three days later to near Baytown to pick them up. By this time Louie and Douie were definitely confused but handling the situation like the pro-trucking dogs they are.

Update for the boys, we are at the customer in Port Orange, Fla now. Near Daytona Beach. My del appt is 7am tomarrow morning. The boys are doing just fine. I took their clothing off of them today, it's too hot here in Florida for sweaters. Douie has not really had a pee problem to speak of. He only went pee in his pad last night, otherwise, I am stopping my truck about every 2 hrs for a pee break for all 3 of us, and soon, little Aussie Kelly will need pee breaks too. Dewie has not worn his pee pad for a couple days and is doing fine. Both are on the bed with me now and it's relaxing time. We just came in from our nightly walk, they ate some more, drank water and are relaxing. They both eat, drink, and bathroom duties just fine. They usually sleep while I'm driving, as they are longtime trucker dogs and are used to this environment.

Thank you again to all who helped her make the journey home. Especially to Jim for allowing her to stay in his truck for so long in what was a less than favorable condition. After several baths and a lot of brushing, you can see what a true beauty she is. Take care all, Alison

The Saga of Sandy Sweetie -- Wednesday April 9th, 2008

Just a few days ago, Operation Roger brought us two precious very senior dogs from a cruelty case closing a puppy mill. The dogs were housed in old camper shells - twenty dogs to a shell. Of these, Rainbow Ranch received a 6 pound Pekingese. We named her Sandy in honor of her rescuer at the Tuscarawas County (Ohio) Humane Society. The other was named Danny for the Operation Roger trucker who brought him all the way from Ohio. Danny is a small 8 pound black and white silky Shih Tzu.

MIracles do happen! A long time donor family of the Ranch still grieved for their furbabies who passed away about 5 years ago. Sandy Sweetie Pie met them at the Post Office on the way back from her geriatric physical. Well, you guessed it. Sandy is now named Sandy Sweetie Pie and is the recipient of this family's generosity. They paid 100% of her medical bills incurred in getting her spayed, having her remaining teeth cleaned, her ears treated and her useless leg removed! They fostered her for several days and gave her a taste of what a real family would be like. Hopefully, Sandy will find a real home before she crosses the rainbow. If not, she is very beloved here at the ranch and will sleep with Heather and get as much love as possible.

We are still hoping that Danny's new family will appear in the near future. In the meantime, he is loved dearly here and has already made great friends, Taco, Shasta Magic and Rudy! There is so much sadness about animal cruelty and puppy mills but once in a long time, one of these dogs gets her own little miracle - a real family who will love and cherish her for the years she has remaining instead of a cold dark dirty camper shell.

If you are interested in adopting Sandy or Danny or any of our abandoned dogs, please email us rainbowranchfl@msn.com!

#258 CHANCE (Tibetan Terrier) Allentown, PA - Mendota Heights, MN

CHANCE #258 a 1.5 y/o 25# male Tibetan Terrier began his journey in Bowmanstown, PA.  Sandy, the rescuer, brought Chance to driver Debra H in Allentown.  Even though Debra knew the receivers were on vacation for another week, she decided to take Chance on board anyway.

She fell in love with the little fella and had nothing but glowing reports to give.  Debra couldn't make it all the way up to Mendota Heights.  However, she met a driver from Krystal's 4-Wheelers in the Cedar Rapids area.  With the help of drivers from Krystal's 4-Wheelers, Chance did make it on home to his new Dad, Tim.

Here We Grow Again! -- Monday March 31st, 2008

Third came Betty - Betty is a 10 year old Beagle mix with a heart of gold. Very calm and loving, Betty acted like she had always been here from the moment she arrived from Greenville County Animal Control in South Carolina. Little Betty was also delivered by Operation Roger! We sure love the truckers!!! Betty is well-liked by the other dogs and is mildly active although very arthritic and on medication.

Hi Taryn at GCAS and friends of Rainbow Ranch:

I want you to know that dear Betty Beagle passed away yesterday at 2:27 (May 28, 2008). We tried very hard to make her last days very good ones - she had several trips to the vet, we resolved an open clotted dental socket that hemorrhaged, and she had her teeth cleaned. Betty followed me from the kitchen to the barn to the bedroom - she was a dear slow old lady who loved to eat! I never skimped on her portions and she was able to put on four pounds and filled out so nicely. But her teeth and the related infection that was rather virulent finally led her to decline very quickly over the weekend. She had improved since her arrival here on antibiotics but, a few days after completing her third bout of antibiotics, Betty just decided that life was too much.

We had helped her close the two "cage" or bed sores or whatever they were (one on the left chest) and one in the groin area but this weekend the one at her leg/groin juncture painfully opened again. The vet thinks these sores may have been symptomatic of a metastatic cancer. Betty entered the hospital Tuesday night and was given fluids and x-rayed and blood-tested to determine what was the cause of her sudden decline.

There was no one result pointing to an obvious diagnosis - just old old age. Our vet thinks Betty was probably at least 15. As is our "rule", Betty was held with a blanket and cuddled while she was euthanized. She crossed the bridge immediately so she was ready.

On her last day here at the Ranch, 1 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound Freddie would go over to her and sit beside her and howl - how amazing is the bond between dogs. These are the only hounds at the ranch and obviously there was some affinity not apparent to us humans but definitely that exists in the pack.

It has been our honor and privilege to love this dear old dog. We hope that her last days were filled with sunbathing, lounging in the kitchen, slow walks in the dog park and happy friendships with the other residents. Thank you, GCAS, for allowing us to love Betty. And thank you, Operation Roger, for bringing Betty safely here!

Lovingly for the doglets, Heather M, Rainbow Ranch Pet Retirement Home, Inc.,PO Box 685, Candler, FL

Then came Sarge - we had been waiting some time for Sarge. He is an Aussie (cattle dog) who is congenitally deaf. Sarge has been taught some hand signs and is doing fine here. The funny thing about him is his tail chasing. Sadly though, it is our opinion that Sarge suffers something else on top of his deafness. When stressed, he responds with almost violent tail chasing. There may be some brain disconnect but his behavior is ok here and with a bit of supervision, Sarge shows no threat to the smaller dogs or to the bigger dogs when he starts his tail chasing! Sarge is only a year old so he may be adoptable once we get his training completed. Sarge comes to us from Operation Roger!

I picked up a puppy named Iceman. He's 12 weeks old, Deaf, and is a mini aussie shepherd. He is going to his new home in Indiana, to a family with a Deaf member. I also got a cat named Killer. She is going to Massachussetts to her new family. Both animals are doing great. They are spending a few days with me during my hometime, then we will get them to their homes.

Kitty is very sweet and laid back. I took her outside today to let her walk, then I picked her up and carried her around and let the cool breeze brush her face, and she looked around at all the birds in the trees. She liked being outside and is fine with me holding her. She loves to play with her toys in the house. She can jump high and gets on the kitchen counter. I keep everything very clean, and I am training her not to jump up while I am cooking. She learns fast. She is cute and sweet and is a very good kitty. Here are some photos' for your website. Susan

He did have some accidents in my bedroom, but that's ok, he's just a baby and is learning. I take him outside alot and he uses the bathroom very good. I give him praise when he potties outside. He is a loveable furball. He rides well in my big truck, and small nissan truck. He went with me to get my transmission line fixed at the dealer, and he rides well. He's learning where to lay to be most comfortable. He does not like being in his cage with the door closed. He is learning how to be a trucker dog. He learns quick. He will be in his cage with the door open, and he hides his chewies in there too.

#243 PIGGY (DSH Cat) Boise, ID - Sacramento, CA

PIGGY #243, a 4 y/o 10# Male DSH Cat needed transportation from one sister in Boise, ID, to another sister in Sacramento, CA. He sat on our board for two months during which time several terrible snow storms hit his part of the country, preventing many drivers from even considering taking on a pet to transport.

Eventually though, driver, Jim F, made it through and picked Piggy up on his way to Washington state, knowing he wouldn't be able to get to Sacramento. Piggy protested the first day out but after that made himself at home and thought he ruled the roost. He quickly adapted to being a "truck" cat.

The two traveled back through Idaho, Utah, Colorado, down to Phoenix, AZ, and then over to Gardenia, CA, where Operation Roger shuttle driver Kathy L picked Piggy up from Jim. She then enlisted her boss, Mick F, to take Piggy along with him when he left from Chico the next day for Stockton. Again, Piggy protested the car ride, nearly driving Mick batty. Driver Nancy R picked up Cinnamon in Fort Worth, TX, from Ginger B of Tuckers Tag Along Rescue where she joined another transport, Colby # 241. The two got along until Colby's puppyness got too over wheming and Cinnamon put him in his place.
Nancy termed Cinnamon a sweety who only wanted to be loved. Now Cinnamon was headed for Roseburg, OR, but Nancy could only get her to Ripon, CA. Ginger found Krystal M who has developed a phenomenal group of volunteer shuttle drivers around the country. Through Krystal, Cinnamon transferred from an 18-wheeler to a series of 4-wheelers.

Then it was on to Dusty B in Weed, CA, who in turn transported her on to Grants Pass, OR, to meet her new "Mom" Vicki H who happily took her on home to Roseburg. OR.

#241 COLBY (Hound/Healer) Carthage, TX - Tucson, AZ

COLBY #241 is an 8 m/o 40# Male Bluetick Hound/Healer who was rescued by Ginger B of Tuckers Tag Along Rescue from the Irving, TX, kill shelter just before he was to be put to sleep (pts). Transferred to Carthage, TX, to a temporary foster home, Colby didn't do too well there.

Driver Nancy R picked up Colby near Longview, TX, and proceeded on to Fort Worth, TX, where she picked up an older dog, Cinnamon. Then the fun began for Nancy.

So happy not to be caged any longer and to have a playmate, Colby wouldn't leave the older Cinnamon alone. Eventually she had enough of Colby and proceeded to put him in his place. He wouldn't stay out of the garbage, or any number of things he could get into while Nancy was driving. He ate a hole in a night shirt, two tennis balls given to him to play with, and two collapsible dog dishes. One morning Nancy woke to discover her hair, braided into one long braid, was two inches shorter as Colby had chew it off.  Laughing, Nancy said at least it was evenly chewed.

While out of the truck, Nancy had left the window open a couple inches for air venting and came back to find Colby had put one paw on the window edge and the other on the automatic window control and his paw was caught. The driver in the next truck was laughing and so was Nancy after she determined he was unhurt. Colby just looked at her as if to say, "well, aren't you going to get me out of this predicament??"

Colby was picked up by his new forever family, Trudi C, in Tucson, AZ. At last report, he is doing much better and learning to be well behaved under the persistent tutoring of Trudi.

#239 PHANCY (Min Schnauzer) Longview, TX - Evansville, IN

Phancy #239 a 7 y/o 15# female Miniature Schnauzer began her journey in Longview, TX, as an owner surrender. Dr. Angie, her husband, and daughter met driver Sue W in Mount Pleasant, TX.

Phancy quickly adapted to her new surroundings and Sue's two Malti-Poo's, Louie and Douie. At night she would go into her crate and not come out. The food and water bowls were right in front of her crate so she didn't have to go far to satisfy her thirst.

During the weekly Sunday night meeting, Sue discovered driver Dave W was in Knoxville, TN, and she was headed there. Phancy didn't fancy changing partners but soon adapted to the new truck and being the only pet on board.

#236 ROMEO & #237 CALLA (English Cocker Spaniels) New London, OH - Tyler, TX
ROMEO #236, a 5 m/o 25# male, and CALLA #237, a 4 y/o, 25# female English Cocker Spaniels began their travels in New London, OH. Due to their owner's circumstances, Romeo and Calla, came to the attention of one of Operation Roger's former co-ordinators, Michelle G who arranged for their transport.

It took three truck drivers, one rescue, and one 4-wheeler to get these two home. Operation Roger driver Josh W picked up the two in Delaware, OH, from their owner Linda Z and overnighted them. He then met driver Jerry H in Lebanon, IN, the next day. Jerry kept them overnight and delivered them to driver Jay M in Oklahoma City, OK.

Jay and his wife, Adele, overnighted them before Jay traveled to Dallas, TX, to meet Claudie S, a shuttle driver for Ginger B of Tuckers Tag Along Rescue near Weatherford, TX. Claudie then made the final leg to deliver these two to their new home in Tyler, TX.

Josh reported they both were well behaved but fought their leashes. A little nervous on the truck but that is to be expected. Jerry says Romeo, being a puppy, was outgoing and energetic. He would lay on the floor by the seat while Calla would be on the bed. Both were going better on their leashes in the short time he had them.

Jay said the night the two were overnighted Romeo would jump on the coffee table and just stand there. When no one moved to "groom" him he would just look at them strangely. Claudie had no trouble with either one and met Jean R and her two granddaughters in Tyler. The girls were extremely excited to get their new charges. Both plan to show the two for scholarships.

Want to send huge thanks to Cathy (Kathy?), Jerry, Josh, and all those who helped get Calla and Romeo to their new home in Texas! Very fast too!

Calla has stolen the heart (and bed!) of the little girl who is her new owner, and the puppy, well, he's just being a silly happy puppy.

Thanks to much to all of you, you guys are the greatest!
Love, Michelle and Linda

#235 VELVETEEN (PIT) Mineral Wells, TX - Charlotte, NC
VELVETEEN #235, a 10 m/o 45# Pitbull began her journey at the kill shelter in Irving, TX. Rescued by Ginger of Tucker's Tag Along Rescue at the very last minute before she was scheduled to be PTS, Velveteen took in stride the several moves from foster to foster until Operation Roger driver Randall M picked her up near Weatherford, TX, to start her final journey to Charlotte, NC.

From the beginning, Randall was calling in laughing at the antics of his charge. Laid back, easy going Velvetten quickly made herself at home... on Randall's bunk. She not just curled up as most dogs would do, she sprawled out on her back, feet up, and slept soundly.

When Randall would try to convince her she was a deeaugee and belonged on the floor, she would talk back to him, telling him he didn't know what he was talking about. She was enjoying her sleep just fine, thank you very much.

Needless to say, Randall fell in love. But, she had a home to go to through the receiving rescue. He did make it known to them, however, that if the receiving family didn't want her, he was to be called.
