#462 DIXIE (American Bulldog) (Nashville, TN - North Bend, WA DIXIE, a 1 y/o 33# female has finally made it to her new fur-ever home! Yeah! This transport has been the longest in our history. But, all along the way, Dixie has made forever friends both human and canine. Coming from an abusive home, Dixie began her trip with rescuer Faye P in Nashville, TN. On our Pet Board for a month, she joined Team Drivers Gill and Darla F for the ride across country to the Los Angeles area. Once there she needed to go north but no rides were immediately available. Layover Home Joanne K stepped forward and took Dixie home to Wrightwood to await her next ride. When Joanne needed to go on vacation, Layover Home Linda J stepped in and took Dixie home to Reseda. At both homes Dixie reportedly played and played with the doggys of her hostesses. Then Driver Mark Miller finally made in down into the area and took Dixie home with him to his wife, Jennifer, also a Layover Home with Operation Roger. Mark's next trip didn't take him to WA so Dixie waited for his return and got acquainted with Bella, another doggy awaiting transport south and east to FL. Then her day came. Dixie is now is the arms of her very patient, new fur-ever Mom, Nancy A, who met them in Ellensburg, WA. WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL FROM THE LOH: Monday, July 5, 2010 3:08 AM To: "Operation Roger - Sue" operationroger01@yahoo.com Dixie was a very special little girl. She loved to hunt for toads in my back yard after the sun had set. She always new exactly where the toads where located. She even picked up a few toads but soon found out they tasted real bad. But that did not discourage Dixie. The next evening she was out looking for toads once again. She also loved to play with the big dogs that where three times her size & weight. She truly enjoyed every day to the fullest. It was a pleasure & joy being her foster Mom. Jo Ann W. yay for Dixie! I'm glad she's doing well!
I enjoyed having Dixie around. She's a small dog with a big attitude and she would never back down. When she thought my 2 big German Sheperd boys were too much for her she would jump up and hang on to their necks while growling. There were times when they were terrified of her and tried to run away and little Dixie would be right behind them! I also had a good laugh when my boyfriend tried to get Dixie to circle to the left by bribing her with cookies. If you've been around Dixie you know that she often times will walk in circles but ONLY to the right. My boyfriend was determined he was going to get her to circle the other way and this would go on for hours until he finally gave up, it was so funny!!! Dixie and my foster child "Bella", an 8 month old Pitbull mix would race up and down my hallway for hours. They were the best of friends during Dixie's stay with me.

#461 MEEKA (Calico X Cat) Houston, TX - Van Nuys, CA
(for an unknown time this story can be found on the following link for FOX News Houston CH 26. http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/local/100628-9-lives-cat-spends-2-lives-to-get-home )
MEEKA, a 2.5 y, 5# female began her travels in IL. She was moving with family to CA when she escaped unnoticed at a rest area at the NM/TX border on I-40. The family left without realizing Meeka wasn't with them. Donna and Jack H were returning from NM to Houston, TX, when they stopped at the same rest area. Meeka's meows got their attention. Deciding she definitely was somebody's pet, they just couldn't leave her to the elements. They left their number with an attendant and took Meeka with them. On June 9, We received a call from Jody Sinclair, PR Director for Atty Jim Adler, saying Meeka's story and Operation Roger's relationship with her would be on CH 26 Fox morning news in Houston on June 10. Then one of our long time drivers, Kevin Q, called in his location. This was his first transport and it turned out to be a memorable one for him. He wasn't sure how his MinPin traveling companion, Mermaid, would like a cat as a passenger. Not really familiar with cats himself, Kevin stepped up to the plate and bravely took on the challenge. He soon called back all excited. "Did you know they want to meet me with a camera crew from Fox News?" Meeka was met at Casiac, CA, by the family, George & Ann C and their three boys, Hunter, Colton, Landen. The oldest son, Hunter, immediately got Meeka out of the carrier and into his arms. On Meeka's part she knew them instantly. The three boys argued over who was to hold her during the hour and a half it would take to get their new home to Ventura. Meeka's relationship with this family goes further back. Instead of trying to tell that story, we're going to let Angie W, a member of the family, do that below. Operation Roger Driver Kevin Q pu 6-25-10 del 6-28-10 ************************************************************************************************ WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL: Hey Sue... Here is the story. I'm making it a lot longer winded than you probably wanted but I wanted to keep all the details! Basically my eldest nephew, Hunter, found Meeka when there was a house that burnt down back home. This happened back in Oglesby, Illinois, where my sister & family just moved from. They have had Meeka for about a year & a half or so. As Hunter went to check out the local fire, Meeka ran to him and jumped into his arms and never left. He took his new rescue home & called her his own. Since that fire, Meeka was Hunter's pride & joy. Fast forward to a month ago on our trip to Southern California. While we headed west and entered New Mexico, we stopped at the rest stop. I walked Meeka on a leash....which by the way walking a cat is never an easy feat!...while my sister, Ann, took my two youngest nephews, Colton & Landen, to the rest room. Once we were loaded up and Meeka was back inside, I took her leash off. While attempting to give the youngest nephew, Landen, some pepto bismol to settle his upset tummy, he started to gag....I quickly opened the door and opened the extended cab door to attend to him. Once he was okay, we were off on our way. After two hours had past we stopped again at another rest stop...but Meeka wasn't there!!!! Sneaky little devil must of gotten out while I attended to Landen! Oh no! My sister insisted they go back & try to find her. We caught up to the 30' moving van so my brother-in-law George & I could swap and they could head back to look for her. Keep in mind Hunter had no idea that we had accidently lost Meeka because we were too afraid to tell him and he was in the moving van so only the two little ones knew that we lost her. Plus he would of been extremely upset. I of course felt extremely responsible. So I headed up the driving of this gigantic yellow Penske...traveling opposite of the Meeka search. Once back at the rest stop, Ann & George drove all around the place calling for her but came up empty handed. George said Ann was driving the wrong direction where the truckers pull in and they had to dodge her as she yelled "kitty kitty kitty" out the window!! If the truckers only knew of our sad loss! I could of cried. So there they are at 4 a.m. in the dark cat searching and I'm trucking as fast as I can in the big yellow Penske. At this point Hunter is talking all about Meeka and how much he likes having Meeka as his pet....and I did everything just to keep it together since I knew the truth. Because we could only drive 65 mph in the huge truck we figureded it was best to keep trucking and the Chevy could catch up later. At one point they were 5 hours behind us. We were all emotionally exhausted. Ann spoke with the Rest stop attendee and gave her all of their information just in case Meeka popped up. The lady was wonderful and mentioned that the grounds manager loves animals and will leave food out to help find her. How amazing are these people? She mentioned that it happens all the time and they have dogs and cats stranded there a lot! Who knew? :( Here we are, Hunter and I, at the border to California and the Tan Chevy Sierra extended cab about 2 hours behind us at this point. They eventually caught up to us in Barstow, CA, but George couldn't stop because he knew the first thing Hunter would of done was run to the truck to see how Meeka was doing. So we continued to my Aunt and Uncles in Van Nuys, CA, where George broke the bad news. We were all pretty teary but hopeful due to the reassuring rest stop lady. Then the phone rang and it was Donna. The thoughtful lady who found Meeka on top the Coke machine at the same rest stop we lost her at! She was meowing soooo loud that Donna couldn't not help. We figured out she found her only 30 minutes after we left. Unfortunately if you are familiar, Houston is much further away from California than where we lost her! Darn! Well at least she is safe and not in the middle of field alone! Plus Donna was a cat lover and seemed very sweet and happy to be a part of our story. After expensive airplane travel choices and ideas to take a trip back across the country they all came up very pricing and time consuming. I was like no way! We are not driving again! Our luck hasn't served us well on one trip...forget another! Now what? George was a short-haul truck driver and thought there has to be some service since the truckers go everywhere. We thought of posting a craiglist ad in hopes that the right Truck Driver would see it...we didn't know what to do. That's when I found Operation Roger. The most perfect solution to our problem. I thought, "leave it to them, they seem like experts!" We were optimistic and 3 weeks later Meeka will be coming to her new home in California Tuesday! She hasn't even seen the new house yet! I cannot Thank-you enough for helping my family and putting smiles on my nephew's faces again. It's a very happy ending to our crazy story thanks to your organization. The funniest part is one of Donna's friends used to be affiliated with Fox News here in California. What? Ha! I guess all of Houston knows about Meeka & the Carrier family that moved to California due to some news cast. There may even be a news team when we meet the generous Trucker who is bringing us Meeka. Makes for a cute story on Primetime I suppose. Ridiculous, but still an amazing adventure!! Sorry for all the details, but its worth the time reading. Again, thanks a million. I will be putting Operation Roger on my yearly donation list. Maybe be a good thank-you lesson for Hunter too. ;) ***************************************************************************************************

9 Lives Cat Spends 2 Lives to Get Home
Updated: Monday, 28 Jun 2010, 8:55 PM CDT Published : Monday, 28 Jun 2010, 8:55 PM CDT
HOUSTON - Meeka is seven lives away from the grim reaper, but it was all worth it for that big trip home.
The two-year-old cat has been across the U.S. but Meeka's adventure started in flames.
Meeka's family rescued her from a burning house in Illinois.
When the family decided to move to Los Angeles, California, she went with them, but when they found themselves in a travel stop in Glen Rios, New Mexico - tragedy struck.
The family lost the cat and were forced to continue their way to Los Angeles, sad and cat-less.
But a bit of local luck was on Meeka's side when a Houston resident came across the stranded cat on her way from New Mexico.
The Houstonian saw the tags on Meeka's collar and contacted the family in California. Unfortunately, the family lacked the funds to transport the cat all the way from Houston.
That's where Operation Roger comes in.
A national association of 18-wheeler driving volunteers offered their services to both the family and Meeka to reunite them once more.
The plan is to have volunteers shuttle Meeka across state lines back to California. ***************************************************************************************************
#460 ROCCO/MADDOX (Boxer X) Jackson, MI - Vidor, TX ROCCO, a 3 y/o 51# male started out in dire circumtances. Found stranded at an abandoned house with moldy food and dirty water, Barbara E called the authorities to help. However, they said the living conditions were OK! moldy food and all and wouldn't help. That wasn't good enough for Barbara. She took the dog she named Rocco to the vet immediately and got him fixed up with everything he needed and then put him in boarding. A friend in Vidor, C.J., said he would take the dog. We were in the process of trying to find a Layover Home in order to get him out of boarding when Driver Robert Q called in on his way to CO. With fingers crossed, we awaited his next load assignment and were elated when it took him through Lake Station, IN, where Barbara and Rocco met him at a truck stop. During the one and half weeks Rocco was on truck, Robert had to attend a containment class at a company facility. Rocco stayed in the hotel room and never caused a problem. In fact, he was in dog heaven with his very own large comfortable bed! In the truck, Rocco would lay on his blanket on the floor. This was his own preference. As soon as Robert would get up, Rocco would scoot up into the passenger seat and prefer to watch the scenry. Robert reported Rocco was extremely well behaved and well mannered. He just couldn't understand how someone could just abandoned such a pet. Rocco's new Dad C.J. insisted on driving from Vidor to Humble to pick up Rocco because he wanted pictures of him and the truck. #459 BUNNY (Hound-Shepherd X) San Antonio, TX - Alamosa, CO BUNNY, a 4-5 m/o female wandered up to the motel room door of Serviceman Robert J. She was thin, dirty, hungry, and starving for affection. Robert took her in, fed her, bathed her but there was a slight problem. He was due to deploy to Afganistan in three days. He tried diligently to find a home for her with one of the rescues in the town where he was with no luck. They were all full. Not wanting to just leave her out on the streets again, Robert and his wife Robin decided Bunny had to get home to Colorado. Robin contacted Operation Roger while Sue was literally driving back from Oklahoma City, OK, in her personal vehicle. Sue called Sarah B, a Layover Home out of New Braunfels, TX, and Mary Ellen H, a Layover Home out of Kileen, TX. Sarah agreed to pick up Bunny the next day from Robert in San Antonio. She then drove to meet Mary Ellen in Austin. The plan was for Mary Ellen to foster Bunny until Operation Roger could get a driver through Kileen to take her on up toward Alamosa. Then a wonderful thing happened. A friend of Mary Ellen's fell in love with Bunny. Robin approved the adoption and Bunny is now in a loving home, safe and sound. Thanks to the big heart and love of a young serviceman, Bunny is no longer running the streets. Thanks Robert. #458 MAMA CAT (DMH Tabby) Mobile, AL - Reseda, CA MAMA CAT, a 6#, 3-5 y/o Female Orange Tabby began her travels in the Mobile Animal Shelter. Driver and LOH Dave and Raynae B picked up Mama Cat and took her home with them, getting her to the vet for all her paperwork and shots. Raynae drove her to Meridian, MS, 9 days later to meet Driver Bob F and his traveling companion, Little Joe. They in turn took Mama Cat to LOH Sue W in Joshua, TX. Three days later, Sue drove to Oklahoma City, OK, to meet Driver Mike W. Mama Cat joined Dillion, Mike's deaf Blue Heeler who immediately added her to his protective herd, Lockie, a rescue out of NC, and Jeremy, a rescue out of MO, in addition to Mike's other traveling companion, Woody, a grey tabby. With Mama Cat the last of the bunch to be delivered, Dillon was not happy his "herd" had deserted him. All he had now was Woody, and, well, Woody was old hat. Mike says Dillon pouted and Woody was happy to be the only cat again! Mama Cat is now at home with her new Mom Linda J. She was so sweet all the parties involved were touched by her presence. Operation Roger Drivers Dave B, Bob F, Mike W, and LOH Raynae B and Sue W pu 6/3/10 - del 6/21/10 *********************************************************************** WE RECEIVED THIS REPORT FROM LOH SUE W: I kept emphasizing to my grandkids they must be careful going in and out of my house so Mama Cat wouldn't get out. There were several times when I would realize they had been in and out and I hadn't seen her. Talk about going into high gear. I would look in every nook and cranny with no results...all the while calling" Mama Cat, Mama Cat where are you?" Then, lo and behold, she would be sitting on the stairs, or laying in the kitchen, or laying in the doorway to the bathroom. Right where I would have been walking! Her look would be, "Oh, were you calling me? I'm right here. Oh, hmmm. I'm sleepy." *********************************************************************** WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL FROM THE RECEIVER: To: operationroger01@yahoo.com Mama cat is doing great! She's slowly starting to adjust and likes to follow me around the house. Her favorite spot to sleep is inside one of the pet carriers haha I've also figured out that she's very picky with her food. I had the best and most expensive food for the other cats and all she wanted was the Purina Cat Chow so I ended up buying some more. She's is so calm! All my dogs and cats will be running around her in a circle and she doesn't even move one inch! She's an amazing cat, thank you for all the help with her :)Linda **********************************************************************
#456 JOANIE (Chihuahua X) and #457 PISTOL (Basset X) (Decatur, AL - Benton, IL) JOANIE, a 2 y/o 12# female, and PISTOL, a 4 y/o 20# male, were in the care of Carol W, Director of the Decatur Animal Shelter when adopted by Cheryl N. Arrangements were made for LOH Laurie A to meet Carol about half way between Decatur and Mt. Juliet, TN, on Saturday. Laurie was to care for the duo until a driver could be found to get them on to Illinois. On Friday, a western driver, one not usually in that part of the country, notified Operation Roger of his location which turned out to be only 20 minutes from Decatur and his projected route was through Benton. Hurried calls were made. Unfortunately, Carol could not meet with the driver and then a few minutes later the driver's route was changed and he wouldn't be going through Illinois afterall. So, the plans between the Carol and Laurie were on again. On Saturday another western driver, again one not usually in that part of the country, called in his location. He was 30 minutes out of Antioch where he planned to stop to eat. Laurie was contacted just as she walked into her home with PISTOL AND JOANIE. Again, hurried calls were made and Laurie met Driver Dave D. Within just a few hours, the duo arrived to meet their new Mom Cheryl N near Benton, IL. This certainly was an unusally short transport but a successful one. Dave said JOANIE slept all the way. Nothing bothered her. In the opinion of Cheryl and Dave PISTOL is barely a year and certainly lived up to his name. Dave says he didn't stop moving from the time he got into the truck. Down on the floor, on the bunk, on the seat to look out. He wanted to see everything! #455 JEREMY (Papillon) Kirbyville, MO - Surprise, AZ JEREMY, a perky 8 m/o 7# male came from rescuer Linda B. He met Driver Mike W in Springfield, MO, and joined Mike's own two pets, Dillon, a deaf Blue Heeler, and Woody, a tabby cat. Also on board was another rescue, Lockie, out of NC. It didn't take Dillon long to plant himself between Lockie and his "herd," Jeremy and Woody. It wasn't long before Jeremy made himself at home on the bunk with Dillon. After delivering Lockie in NM, Mike and his remaining crew headed toward Tempe, AZ, where Mike was to pick up a trailer the next morning at the Gammage Theater. Upon confirming with Jeremy's new family, Bill and Carol S, their destination, it was discovered they were going to the Broadway show, The Heights, the same night Jeremy was to arrive. After the show, they drove around to the back of the building where Mike and Jeremy were waiting. The first thing Jeremy did was to growl at Carol, which made Mike happy because Jeremy had growled at him also. Now he didn't feel so bad. When asked how Dillon took the loss of two of his charges, Mike said he was not at all happy. His "herd" Pug) San Diego, CA - Broken Arrow, OKwas dwindling too fast. Dillon just had to comfort himself with Woody and one more transport, Momma Cat, who had come on board in Oklahoma City. #454 HOBBS (Pug) San Diego, CA - Broken Arrow, OK HOBBS, a senior 13 y/o 17# male was surrendered to the rescue after spending the last couple of years outside pretty much by himself. He went to live with foster Mom Sandra C to await transport to his new Mom Ellen B. As San Diego is a hard place to get any pet out of or into we were concerned it would take Sandra driving to Ontario to meet a driver. Lo and behold, Driver Debra B was at the right place at the right time. Sandra and Hobbs met Debra in Vista. From the moment Hobbs got on board, Debra was in love. She said he was extremely smart. It didn't take Debra's Papillion, Flora, long to teach Hobbs the proper way to get back into the truck after their walks. He learned to put his paws on the bottom step and wait to be lifted inside. However, Ivan, Debra's Tabby cat, loved to bop Hobbs on the noggin whenever he walked by. At night, Flora and Ivan didn't like him on the bed to sleep so he had to sleep in his crate. It worried Debra that Hobbs drank water excessively. Finally she made it so he couldn't get to the bowl...or so she thought. It didn't take him long to figure out how to get to it. After learning about the previous two years of his life, Debra thinks Hobbs learned to gorged himself on water because of the lack of it in his environment. After the second day on the truck, Hobbs refused to eat. Finally, Debra discovered Hobbs had figured out how to get into the closet where the pet food was stored. He had ripped open the bag of dog food and would be eating while Debra was driving. He had also ripped open cat food and helped himself. In Amarillo, Debra took him into her broker's office and he was almost dog napped. Everyone wanted to take him home with them. He loved to give kisses. Delivered to his new Mom, Ellen B, in Tulsa, OK, Hobbs will enjoy the rest of his life with love and affection. 453 LOCKIE (American Staffardshire Terrier/Shepard X) Clarkton, NC-Colorado Springs, CO LOCKIE, a 60-80# male 4 y/o was driven from Clarkton by Tracy, a representative of the Elizabethtown Vet Hospital, to Charlotte to meet Driver Mike W. Lockie joined Mike's Blue Heeler, Dillon, and his cat, Woody. Dillon quickly let it be known to Lockie, Woody was not to be messed with. Extremely skittish, flintching at every slight touch, Lockie learned to accept and respond to Mike's touching without as much of a problem over the next six days especially when he learned Mike kept treats in his pockets. He liked those along with the hotdog morsels Mike woulde reward him with. Lockie was an escape artist. On three occasions, Mike was outside the truck talking with other drivers. Lockie learned to put his paw on the automatic window button which rewarded him with an open window and an open invitation to escape. Each time Mike would call to him and Lockie would respond. Also each time, he was returned to the truck he would go sit in front of the closet where Mike kept the treats. He knew exactly what he was doing. Mike tried covering the automatic window button but Lockie would still manage to open the window until finally Mike devised a cover Lockie couldn't circumvent. This is one smart dog. Mike says he believes Lockie is a 2 y/o and not 4 y/o. In Albuquerque, Operation Roger Shuttle Driver Chris D met Lockie and drove him to meet one of her volunteers, Dave, who in turn met his new Mom, April H, in Raton, NM. Now April didn't know about Lockie's love of treats. She had been given a bag of them which she put on the front seat while Lockie was relegated to the back seat. That didn't last long. Smelling them, Lockie jumped into the front seat to get his treats. April promptly moved them to her lap. Wrong move. In a second or two, Lockie was in her lap trying to get to the treats. It took a good driver to get off onto the shoulder of the road safely while man handling a dog intent on getting himself some food. April quickly got things under control again and they made their way home. Lockie is to undergo training with Scott Martin of the Rocky Mountain Dog Trainers. The difference between a scared, somewhat aggressive dog in NC and the playful dog which arrived in CO was due to the love of one man, Driver Mike W and his dog Dillon. Well done guys. #452 SNUGGLES (Leslie, AR - Kingston, NY) SNUGGLES, a tiny 4# 2 y/o female began her new life in Leslie with rescuers April W and Stephen S. Snuggles met her ride with Driver Robert Harrower in North Little Rock, AR, by the skin of her little teeth. Robert and April had been in communication on her two plus hour trip from Leslie until cell phone problems nearly cost Snuggles her ride. April was behind time and out of communication. Robert stretched out his time to wait at the truck stop as long as he possibly could without putting the delivery of his load in jeopardy. He called the office of Operation Roger truely distraught about having to leave. We could only hope the unthinkable had not happened. In cases like this, the driver has no choice but to leave. Not wanting to give up, Robert made one last call to April as he was beginning to pull out of his parking spot and it worked! Snuggles, a puppy mill rescue, was skittish at first and didn't like Traveler, Robert's Yorki. Having just been spayed that morning, Snuggles obviously didn't want to play and Traveler did. By the second day, things were better as well as Snuggles feeling better and beginning to warm up to Robert. She was safely delivered to her new family, Shamsi R and Gaige C in Montgomery, NY. #451 ASPEN (Siamese DSH X) Billings, MT - Muscatine, IA ASPEN, a 7# 2 y/o white, blue eyed female cat began her journey with rescuer Lindsey B in Billings, MT. She traveled with Driver James W for several days around MT and ID before making her way to Denver, CO, where she went into an Operation Roger Layover Home with Mary Kay W. James related he learned that even a small crack left open in the window for air could spell disaster. Aspen managed to wiggle her head through the opening and escaped. All James could think was she was gone. It took him and two other drivers to corral Aspen and get her back into the truck, leaving definite scratches on James' arms. In disbelief, James watched this wildcat change back into her sweet loveable self as soon as she got back into the truck. She immediately went to her food bowl and started purring as she ate. Guess that means escaping takes a lot out of a cat and makes one hungry! After nearly a week with Mary Kay, she once again boarded a big truck, this time with Driver Robert Q. Adopted by Aerial W in Muscatine, IA, she made herself comfortable on the floor near the gear shift so she could feel the vibration or alternately in her crate strapped to the passenger seat. Delivered safely to Aerial, Robert was quickly back on the road making arrangements to pick up his second passenger. Picked up by Driver Gard Bell, Coltrane rode well and posed no problems as they made their way to Kansas City, Mo, which was as far as Gard was going. Layover Home Tammy M took Coltrane in for a few days to await his next ride on to his original place of adoption in Wilmington, NC. It was there, he was picked up by Driver Terri T who, although knowing she was headed back northwest, decided to work her way to NC. Coltrane and Terri's companion, Oliver, pretty much got along. ************************************************************************************************************** WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL FROM DRIVER TERRI T: Monday, June 14, 2010 To: operationroger01@yahoo.com When a person takes on a responsibility, it is their responsibility to deliver as promised. At times there are circumstances that makes you wonder, “Why did I choose to do this?” Truck driving is not an easy job and neither is transporting precious cargo. We have a lot of regulations and issues that surrounds us on a daily basis. It is the strong love of animals that makes Operation Roger Trucker Pet Transport such an awesome organization. We all have our stories and here is Coltrane’s story. I read on the pet board that Coltrane was a Bulldog mix. He was more like a Pit bull. I called up Tammy and she met me with Coltrane. She informed me that he got along with her dogs, but wasn’t keen to kennels. At first Coltrane sniffed Oliver and then they worked their way to a semi friendship. Our journey started pretty fair. As normal as any lost dog on a strange truck would get along. Coltrane soon grew accustomed to the truck. There was a little issue of Coltrane’s aggression towards Oliver for getting on the bed and being in Coltrane’s “space.” I corrected Coltrane on the aggression and it seemed like it worked for sometime. He believed that the bed was mine and his, but not Oliver’s. Oliver was a little scared of him inside the truck, but on the outside they were friends. They would play and romp around even on our daily walks. Knowing that I had to deliver Coltrane to North Carolina, I had to take an available load to Denver, Colorado. Then a relay load from Cheyenne, Wyoming to McCarran, Nevada. While at the Wal-Mart D.C. in McCarran, Coltrane became agitated at a dog next to us in another truck. To calm Coltrane down I decided to walk him around. Needless to say it never worked. I lifted Coltrane into the truck and as I was getting in, Coltrane bit me. I was upset and watched him lurch at me one more time before I got a hold of his collar and held him at bay. I corrected him in a stern voice and he finally settled down. A person might call me crazy, others might call me weird, but I truly believe in talking to animals as I would want to be talked to. So for a while I sat there and rubbed his head and told him that it wasn’t acceptable and that my truck was mine and Oliver’s. I know he felt my pain. His expression and sadness in his eyes showed remorse. After calming myself down, I phoned the shipper and explained the incident. I then phoned Sue and once again explained. At that time I really wanted Coltrane off the truck. I remembered that if you show fear towards an animal then they can sense the fear. I decided to not let him see my fear. I also believe that each dog deserves a second chance. The next day I called the receiver to address her on the issue. She was skeptical on his behavior and feared that his aggression towards her dogs would be the same. She informed me that she might have to put him down. I have to admit I started crying. I looked at him and wondered why he showed so much aggression. Then the old thoughts came back to me. We made dogs domesticated. They were never domesticated. So it is their animalistic and territorial tendencies that override anything they were ever taught. A couple of hours passed and God once again answered my prayers, the shipper’s prayers and the receiver’s prayers. Melody was looking for a perfect dog for Josh, who lives in Flagstaff, Arizona. He promised Melody that Coltrane would get proper training. When she mentioned this to Linda, she called me right up. I was in California heading towards Flagstaff. Then Josh called me and decided on meeting at the Little America Truck stop. Coltrane at first was skeptical. He didn’t want to leave me, but Josh walked him to his car and he climbed in. They say that dogs look like their owners and at times a dog gets his day. Coltrane received his day and lifetime.

#449 GIDGET (Shih-Poo) Crestview, FL - Grove City, OH GIDGET, a tiny 3 pound 12-15 week old female Shih Tzu-Poodle mix was picked up from Cindy H near Crestview by Driver Dave B on his way out of Florida to AL. Dave fell immediately in love, as most of our drivers do with such a tiny ball of fur like Gidget. He said the first day she was shaky but by the next day she was playing, paying no attention to the movement of the truck. The one thing she learned real quick was when the air brakes were set and made that whooshing sound that meant it was time to go out! Gidget loved to play with Dave's feet. He would shuffle around and she would make like she was a big bad dog and bark at those shoes that probably weighed more than she did! Gidget was met in Upper Sandusky, OH, by her new family James G, his wife, and their 2 teenage sons who were very pleasantly surprised they were getting such a tiny playmate. #448 SADIE (Pit) Athens, TN - DuBois, PA SADIE, a female 34# 7 y/o, has been the personal pet of Stephanie D for the last four years. Health reasons forced her to give her baby to personal friends Josh and Dawn M. Rescued by Stepanie from a breeding situation, Sadie enjoyed her six day ride with Driver Tom and Alice K. Upon seeing her new family, she recognized them without hesitation and went to them with a smile on her face and tail wagging. She loved being up high, immediately stealing the passenger seat whenever Alice would get up from it. Watching the ever changing scenery was her delight. She even endured having her toenails painted. But wait... we need to let the drivers tell their story. Look for it. Operation Roger Driver Tom and Alice pu 23/10 del 5/29/10 *************************************************************************************************** WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL FROM THE DRIVERS: Sadie was our first transport and she was a sweetheart. I enjoyed sharing my ice cream with her. She would jump in Tom's seat as soon as he got out and then jump back to my seat when she saw him coming back. Sadie loved to sit on my lap or in my seat (the minute i got up) to watch out the window. She would look down at all the cars but when we passed a truck her ears would go up as if she knew they were just like us. Sadie also from day one knew which truck was ours out of a parking lot of trucks. We enjoyed her sleeping in the bed with us as much as she did. The best out of the whole experience was seeing how happy she was to see her new family. Tom and I have also gain four new friends for life. We can't wait to continue our help for Operation Roger. #447 ROY (Rhodesian Ridgeback/Chocolate Lab) Aberdeen, MS-Wyckoff, NJ ROY, a 60# 18 m/o male had been surrendered to Astrid P of the Aberdeen Animal Shelter when his family moved. He went to Janice W, the NJ Dog Whisperer, for more training. Roy is to become the companion of a child who witnessed his 2 y/o brother run over. Janice is also the founder of Merlin's Kids, an organization who works to provide pets to autistic children. The volunteers of the Aberdeen AS said Roy was so loveable they had been offered up to four times their normal fees for him but he had already been promised to Janice and her group Merlin's Kids. Driver Bob F met Dianna and her husband, Aberdeen AS volunteers at the Tuscaloosa truck stop. Janice, who had just yesterday returned from Canada, met Bob at a Drum, PA, truck stop. Astrid said Roy was more than unusual. They had several dogs they feared they would have to PTS because of aggression. They put Roy next to them, or in the pen with them, and they calmed down drastically and were able to be adopted. Bob's Puggle, Little Joe, and Roy hit it off immediately. However, when Roy wanted to get up onto the bunk to sleep with him and Bob, Little Joe would have nothing to do with that idea and very verbally told Roy so. Little Joe made it flat understood Roy's place was the floor. While they were great buddies enroute, Roy positioned himself between the seats next to the driver so Bob could just reach down and pet him. Little Joe fussed at Roy about this development (because that was his spot) and Roy just ignored him. We are overjoyed to say we finally did it! After nearly five years of doing this, we have picked up and delivered our first service pet. We have diligently tried on several others but just couldn't get to them before they went by other means. Hi,
Here are some pictures of the first leg of Roy's Trip. We had no trouble meeting up with Robert, Roy and Little Joe seemed to hit it off well. Although we will miss Roy very much we are proud to know he will make a huge difference in a little boys life. Thanks so much for helping us get Roy to NJ. Hopefully we can work together in the future to get more animals too where they need to go.

#446 RANDY (Maltese) Kribyville, MO - Alpharetta, GA RANDY, a 1.10 y/o male weighing in at 7.5 pounds had been kept in a small cage all of his life until rescuer Linda B found him. She then found him a home in GA where he will be able to play with two boys. Several drivers attempted to pick him up but were too far away for Linda and her husband Don to travel. The trucking world's freight routes can pose a problem at times. We were considering moving him to a Layover Home in OH where he could be on a more north-south freight lane to GA. Then Team Drivers Scott and Lisa C were on an unusual run from Kansas to Georgia right through Springfield, MO, where they met Randy. Kate had brought a cage with kitty litter and food inside. She did not ask Scooter's opinion on this because his first night on the truck he trashed about inside his cage to the point where his litter box and food was all over his carrier. He will be 2 yrs old on April 24th. He is a 74.5 lb, male, neutered Labradoodle. Jimmy has been adopted by a wonderful couple in Enumclaw, Washington. Now all we have to do is get him to his forever family. I know he is bigger than what you probably accept for transport but I'm asking you to please consider this very special boy. He has so much to give and is such a sweet boy. Until he went into foster care he spent the first two years of his life on a chain or cable tie. Since he's been under my care he has learned to run like a normal dog, instead of the strange bunny hopping style of moving that he had to do in order to avoid the cable getting wrapped on his legs. He is almost completely healed from those scars left by the cable burns on his legs. I have been fostering and training him for two months now and can assure anyone concerned that he is a perfect boy. He is calm indoors, well mannered, potty trained, travels well, well socialized. He has visited Assisted Living Facility, CPA Firm, newspaper office, Elementary School, Karate School and other places and behaved like a perfect therapy pet. He is loved everywhere he goes. Please visit his page at: http://tailwaggers.shutterfly.com/jimmy and read more about this amazing, sweet boy before you make a decision to deny him based solely on his size. When he sleeps he can curl into the smallest ball. He loves to sleep on the bed with someone cuddling him but will very quickly get off when requested to do so. Just wanted to inform you that Jimmy has been delivered to his new owner and forever home thanks to one of your Operation Roger volunteers, Terri Twyford. We are so greatful for what you do. KEEP ON TRUCKIN' God Bless, Tammy **************************************************************************************************** WE RECEIVED THIS STORY FROM THE DRIVER: Dear Operation Roger,
I have another chance at life because of Tammy and her rescue. It has been a hard two years of my life. I spent a majority of it tied to a tree until Tammy offered her love and guidance. It all started a few months ago when Tammy became my foster mom. She showed me a lot of love. She trained me and offered everything she could, to take care of me. That is where my story starts. I was helping Tammy with a lot of socializing events, like going to a bank or to schools to help people understand animals. I fell in love with Jeff, who was at a school that I was attending. He was teaching their teachers. Normally, I don't care for men but when I first saw him, I ran right to him. Through talking to Tammy, Jeff decided that I should be with his family. There was just something different about him I knew I could trust.
They tried numerous ways to transport me to Washington (state), but it was too expensive. As I tend to be timid, Tammy did not want me handed from person to person. That is when you guys came along. Tammy learned about Operation Roger through another person and patiently waited for my truck ride to my forever home.
Terri, a driver, called Tammy and set up a place and time to meet. Although Tammy was nervous about letting me go and nervous about me being on a big truck, Terri assured her I would be well taken care of and loved. I was nervous at first. I was not sure what I was doing or where I was going or even why. Boy, was I in for a surprise. During the trip, I would sit between the seats (not sure, if I could get on the bed) and nuzzle Terri’s hand almost everyday along that 2 week journey to my new home. I would play and walk with my best new friends, Oliver and Red. I even taught Oliver how to sit. Dogs are great teachers.
Once again, we were at a place where people got inside the trailer and took off whatever was in there. No big deal. Then I saw him. Jeff just showed up. The man I thought I'd loved and lost was there. Right in front of me. When I first saw him, I didn't understand how he knew to be right where we were. But I didn't care why or now. I just knew he belonged to me. I was so happy. I am so happy to be with him at his home, my home too. Therefore, I wanted to write you a letter to say thank you from the tip of my nose to the tip of my tail.

#441 BETHANY/SHADOW (Lab/Chow X) (Macon, GA - Tacoma, WA BETHANY/SHADOW, a 50# female began her trip in Macon with Julia G of All About Paws Rescue. Enroute, the driver named her Shadow because she insisted upon shadowing him everywhere he went. Having been set afire by her previous owner, Shadow had the presence of mind to run to a nearby fire station where she was taken care of. On our Pet Board for awhile, Drive Ray J made it his mission to pick her up and made arrangements to meet Julia in McDonaugh, GA. They first went to VA before working their way across country for the next thirteen days to CA, OR, and then WA. During this time, Shadow proceeded to chew up almost every cord pertaining to Ray's phone, chargers, headset, and a cigarette adapter. He related all this while laughing and admitting it enabled him to upgrade to a bluetooth headset for his phone. He bought her a muzzle thinking that would take care of her chewing. Well, it didn't and did. He put it on her one night and woke the next morning to find she had chewed through it as well! The good thing is, after that she never chewed anything else. The receiver, Brandia, was originally scheduled to meet them in Pasco, WA. However, she was moving that day and couldn't make it. The next meeting place was scheduled for Othello. Enroute to meet them, she ran out of gas and Ray couldn't wait for her and had to start East out of WA. While we scrambled to find a Layover Home, Ray called Brandia from Spokane where he had to put his truck in the shop for an air leak. Brandia called a friend who arranged to have Shadow boarded overnight until Brandia could arrive the following day. As happens sometimes, enroute the driver and dog fell in love. Since Shadow was going to a rescue, both Julie and Brandia decided Ray would make a good home for her. But, in the meantime she needed to get to a vet. There it was discovered she had both heart and tape worms and would need to undergo heart worm treatment. Jay and his family couldn't afford the cost of the treatment and agreed to let the Fairy Dog Mother organization have custody so they could help her. I am attaching a picture of Bethany who was transported by Ray from England trucking from Georgia to Spokane Wa.
Bethany was set on fire but was so smart she ran straight into a firehouse where they put her out & took her to a shelter, but that was as good as a death sentence for her. A black pregnant dog, lab mix. She started to fail physically so we had her spayed which was a heart wrenching decision but she fought so hard for her own life that we had to give her that chance at least. One volunteer took notice of her & contacted me. Well I'm a sucker for a cold wet nose so I said yes. She got here, the driver wanted to adopt her but she turned out to be heartworm positive so he couldn't afford the treatments so we got her healthy & I am proud to report that Ms Bethany went home 2 weeks ago. Her boy is just smitten with her, his behavior & grades have excelled & his momma is the former outreach & rescue coordinator for PAWS Bremerton so she couldn't have gotten a better gig! I cant tell you how much I appreciate this network & the work you do, I know this is only one dog but it was the difference between life or death for this precious sweet girl. I am happy to announce I have 22 more transport requests for 2 more girls who were pulled from a heartstick shelter in N.C. after 3 weeks of agony & waiting... so look forward to more happy tails to come! Operation Roger Team Drivers Kris & Brandy P pu 4-21-10 del 4-22-10 ******************************************************************************************************* WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL FROM THE DRIVERS: This is the story on Louie, the male 5 year old DSH cat. We met the shipper, Susan of the Lucky Paws Animal Rescue, at the Pilot Truck stop in Lodi, OH, at about 10:30 p.m. on 4/22/2010. Louie was a scared little kitty and, at the time of pick up, had not been eating or drinking for a couple of days. Our first destination was East St. Louis, IL, where we did a swap with another driver. We then traveled to Long Island, NY, and then up to St. Albans, VT, to pick up another load. This took us through Watertown, NY, where we made the delivery to the receiver, Patricia G, at about 9:30 a.m. on 4/24/2010. Louie traveled 2,140 miles with us. During his travels, we tried very hard to try to get him to eat or drink something. It looked like he was going to go the whole entire trip without eating or drinking. Finally on the last day of his trip we had a meeting of the minds and Brandy found out that when Louie doesn't want to do something he just won't plain do it. Louie rewarded Brandy with a big old slash on her wrist for her efforts trying to get him to drink. After spending much of that day in his carrier, that night he started meowing so we took him out of the cage. Wouldn't you know it. He finally ate and drank and even used the litter pan. After petting him, Brandy even got him to purr. We then let him have free rain of the truck where Louie and Little Joe, our Toy Poodle, both tried to claim the bed. Little Joe, being a very passive dog who normally will back down from a fight, put his foot, uh...paw..., down and backed Louie into a corner. Louie found the TV and climbed up on top where he stayed until we shut down for the night. He then decided to meow all night till I told him to be quiet. #439 MOP TOP/KNUCKLES (ABPT X) Starkville, MS - West Seneca, NY MOP TOP/KNUCKLES, a 1 yr 40# male began his trip with foster Michele A in Starkville, MS. One driver tried to pick him up but Mop Top didn't get along with the driver's smaller dog. Then, Driver Mike W learned about Mop Top and arranged for his pick up. Concerned at first because of the previous attempt, Mike said that once his dog, Dillon, an ACD, firmly established the proper pecking order with Mop Top, they were friends afterwards. The other interesting point for Mop Top was Mike's cat, Woody. After a few nose swats, a tentative relationship was established. Later on though, Woody would jump down in front of Mop Top who would respond. This resulted in each being put in their respective crates. Mike says Woody would start the whole thing just to get Mop Top in trouble which eventually caused her to be put in her crate for the rest of the trip. Needless to say, Woody was quite vocal about this turn of events. Mike says Mop Top has quite a personality. He got to calling him Gremlin because he would talk. When Mop Top was put in the kennel, Mike swears up and down Mop Top would say, "I want out." Even Mike's wife, Vickie, and Kaitlin J, the receiver, heard it over the phone. When Mop Top wanted outside, Mike would say "Say yes." Mop Top would answer "Yes." Mike would then say "Say, you want out. Mop Top would say "I want out." Mike met Kaitlin in Walden near Buffalo. Picked up by Team Drivers Gill & Darla F, they went with them to their home in Arizona for a few days before continuing on to Olympia, WA. When Bubba heard the voices of Greg and Denise, he cried, wined, carried on, totally excited. Trixie, a lot more skittish, hung back. Greg & Denise A were so excited to get their babies back even though they had to meet the drivers in the wee hours of the morning. The drivers reported these two were the most lazy dogs ever. To move them off the bed meant they would pretend they were still be asleep and just drape over Darla's arms. At home, they laid by the pool and slept when they weren't digging in the trash. Opps, seems Bubba was the culprit there. They needed to be where their "people" were. Bubba like to play, especially with toes. Trixie needed to be held. They were both snugglers and had to be touching when asleep. Like most of our transported pets, they did sleep with whomever was in the bunk. Trixie would jump. #435 TIGGER TOO/MILES (Sheltie) Salt Lake City, UT - Feasterville, PA TIGGER TOO/MILES, a 12 week old 7# male has quite a story. He began his saga in a puppy mill in Missouri before being rescued and sent to Utah. There the rescue organization found a loving home in Pennsylvania. Picked up by Driver Mike W and his traveling companions, Dillon, an ACD, and Woody, a DSH cat, Tigger Too found himself in a semi-truck heading back East. After watching Dillon "poke" with his nose Woody to get a reaction and seeing Woody swat back, Tigger began doing the same. He would get Woody to swat at him and jerk back real quick, over and over. During their walks, he would try his best to keep up with Dillon when Mike would throw a ball. His little short legs just couldn't keep up. He would make it about half way before Dillon would already have the ball and be headed back to Mike. Both would zoom around Mike and be gone again after the ball. Because of his travels, his new family has decided to rename him Miles. We had dinner together at Subway where we met. He's a terrific guy and someone you should be proud to have represent "operation Roger". He called me everyday and took real good care of Miles. I have his email address and will keep him up to date as well. I'm hoping to get Miles to the Vet tomorrow and I will of course keep you updated. Thanks for all your help. Thanks to Heather who rescued him and to your wonderful organization without whom we could not have gotten Miles the nearly 3000 miles (hence his name) to Pennsylvania. Miles is doing quite well and is a happy pup....

#434 ABBEY (Golden Retriever) Highland, MI - Florence, MT ABBEY, a 55# 9-10 y/o Female, began her trip in Highland, MI, with foster Mom Kathy M. Abbey met Driver James Wl in Detroit. James said Abbey was all skin and bones and skittish. She was so weak, James had to lift her in and out of the truck. He made a bed for her on the floor since she couldn't jump on the bunk. They traveled to the East Coast, then up to WI, before getting to MT. During that time, she gained strength and tried to run with Sport, James' ACD/Border Collie, and Dillon, the traveling companion of Driver Mike W. The two drivers were running across country, in their separate trucks, together. When they stopped to let the three dogs play, Abbey would be eager to get out and run with her new companions. If Dillon or Sport made too sharp a turn, Abbey would fall over in her attempt to keep up with them. She would scramble to regain her feet and then she would be up and running again. James considered her a lap dog who needs a lot of love and attention. In Missoula, MT, Abbey's new Mom, Judy M, was on vacation and had arranged for a friend, also named Judy, to meet Abbey and care for her until she could return. James said Abbey got into Judy's pickup and was ready for her next adventure. At last report, Abbey was thriving and doing well. #433 ABBY (DSH Cat) Louisville, KY - Billings, MT ABBY, a 5# 1 yo female white deaf cat started her trip across country with rescuer Debbie W bringing her to the Papa John's Cardinal Stadium parking lot filled with hundreds of tractor-trailers during the Mid-America Truck Show (MATS). At first intimidated by all the big rigs, Debbie perservered and found Driver Mike W who was to transport Abby to Billings. Abby joined Mike's ACD, Dillon, who also is deaf, and his own DSH cat, Woody, and quickly discovered herself in good company. Being deaf didn't stop her. She quickly checked out the rig. Mike said she was a character. Everytime he would bend over, she would take that as a opening to jump on Mike's back to get upon the top bunk or the dash where she liked to lay and watch scenery. Woody didn't care too much for the competition. At night, Abby would sleep on the bed rolled up with Dillon. At first Dillon wasn't too happy about the sleeping arrangements but eventually gave in. Mike said she was beautiful pure white and had striking blue eyes like a Siamese. Met in Billings, MT, by her new owner, Lindsey B, she wasn't sure about leaving the truck having enjoyed the motion. Soon though, the petting she received from Lindsey, changed her mind. WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL: Date: Wednesday, March 31, 2010, 12:45 AM To everyone who made it possible to bring Abby to her forever home, Abby made it to Montana March 30th at 5:00 PM Mountain time. Long trip (3 days) from Kentucky, but she did really well. She loved riding with Mike's dog "Dillon"? and his cat "Woody." Mike described her as very curious as she wanted to explore every inch of the truck cab. Abby got a bath the moment she got home because she was shedding a lot just from the time we picked her up. She has been groomed and dried and loved the hair dryer (as she couldn't hear it and the temperature was set for only "mildly warm.") We will be trimming her nails within the next day or so. She is getting adjusted, but loves to play with the little catnip mice we had for her. She is very playful and throws them up in the air and then runs after them. She also uses the scratching post very well. I'm attaching some photos- but you may want to check with Mike before posting them on the website (just to see if he's okay with it). =) Thank you so much Operation Roger and everyone that was involved in bringing this wonderful new addition to our home. =) Lindsey Battle *****************************************************************************************************
#432 HENRY (Basset/Boxer X) Independence, MO - Seattle, WA HENRY, a 3 mo 17# male began his trip with Margaret B who drove him to Des Moines, IA, to meet Driver Raymond Y. At first the plans were to leave Henry with one of our drivers who often served as a Layover Home. Boz M would then take Henry on to Seattle his next trip. Along the way, Raymond determined he, too, would be going toward WA after he delivered his load in CA so it was decided to keep Henry on board. As it turned out, Henry arrived in Seattle the same day as previously planned. The neat thing is that day turned out to be the first day of Spring Break for 9 y/o Joey G who had fallen in love with Henry when he'd seen his picture. That gave the two quality time together and an opportunity to bond. #431 PHOENIX (ACD/Shepherd X) Window Rock, AZ - Waterford, ME PHOENIX, a 7 mo 45# male was found as a stray during a blinding snow storm when he sought shelter on the porch of house on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Window Rock. A friend of the homeowner, Cathy R, found a home for him across the country in ME. Once again it took the right driver to pick up Phoenix. Knowing they weren't going to ME and yet wanting to get Phoenix traveling, Team Drivers Jimmie & Lea Z decided to take him on board and try to meet with a Layover Home somewhere enroute. Longtime friend of ours, Carol L, Creek Pet Adoption, drove down from Kellyville to Henryetta, OK, to pick him up. She kept Phoenix awaiting another driver. The receiver, Jacqueline F, decided she couldn't wait any longer to get the newest member of her family. Carol took Phoenix to a nearby airport and Phoenix completed his trip via airplane. #430 LUCKY (Doxi) (Huntsville, AL - Hollywood, FL LUCKY, a 5-8yr 15-17# male, was found by truck driver Joe I underneath his trailer, scared, growling, and needy. Eventually, Joe was able to gain Lucky's trust and allowed him to pick him up to put him in his truck. Once he was safe, Joe called the authorities who took Lucky to the Huntsville Animal Shelter. Joe then went on his way but couldn't forget the little guy. He put ads in the local newspaper seeking Lucky's owner with no results. After a few days, the shelter called Joe and offered Lucky for adoption. Joe jumped at the chance. Lucky needed a place to stay until Joe could return. He had heard about Operation Roger and called. Coordinator Sue W contacted one of the Operation Roger drivers, Randall and Jennifer M, who lived in the general area and arranged for them to be a Layover Home. Lucky had a serious gum/teeth problem which Joe paid for in addition to having him neutered, getting his shots, and his health certificate. Then, Lucky needed a place to go to recuperate. Randall and Jennifer drove to Huntsville, picked up Lucky, and took him home to join their own two small pets, including a Doxi, until Joe could return. Thanks to your organization and the kindness of Mike, my dog, Tigger, was able to be rescued. I take him to the park two times a day where he runs and plays with anyone and anything that'll play with him. He's sooooo happy. Mike was so great with him and called me during the two day trip. He told me all about Tigger before he got here so my fears of a new puppyish dog were kept at bay as well. He even bought him a toy and some biscuits. #428 ELMER (Puggle) Salt Lake City, UT - Bantam, CT ELMER, a 10# 3mo male began his trip across country in Salt Lake City with rescuer Heather F who met Team Drivers Scott & Lisa C at a local truck stop. Lisa was reporing in to her Team Leader Kris P when she looked up to see truck drivers scattering across the parking lot, running for their lives. The truck stop was being robbed! Lisa says Elmer was larthargic for the first couple of days on the truck before perking up for the rest of the ride to Olatha, KS, where they met Driver Dan W who would complete the trip with Elmer. Lisa says he would sit on the passenger seat most of the time. At one point he was laying on the floor near the gear shift when he began barking at her phone. A few seconds later, it rang! When they were out for their nature walks, Lisa said she would be ready to go back...Elmer wasn't and didn't until he had done his business. When he was ready, he ran to the front of her truck, put his paws on the headlights and then ran over to the steps and put his paws on them. He was now ready to go! Another incident was Elmer's apparent first encounter with water. The snow was melting and had formed a stream which Lisa had walked through. Scott said Elmer put on his brakes and looked like a cartoon character as he came to a complete stop, refusing to walk through. They had to walk all the way around the stream. Later on, he decided water was okay and would play in it. Driver Dan W said Elmer was a great dog but the next day he started coughing and hacking which got worse as they traveled. Dan says he was a perfect little companion. He informed the receiver of Elmer's health. They made arrangements with their vet and learned the vet thought Elmer was about 5-6 months. #426 CHEYENNE (Shepherd X) Myrtle Beach, SC - Lancaster, CA CHEYENNE, a 1.6 yr 50# female at the time she came on the Pet Board is an example of patience and tenacity by the shipper, the receiver, and Operation Roger. Since her location was so hard to reach, she remained on our board for four months. As we often tell people, all it takes is the right driver in the right area at the right time going the right direction to get a pet moved. Driver David P and his wife, Melody, is an example. New with us, they were able to pick up Cheyenne in Manning, SC, on their way to Florida and determined to see her get to her new home in CA. Warned she was an escape artist, having been known to jump a 6 foot fence, David and Melody kept a close eye on her with no problems at all. David and Melody delivered several loads around the southeast before getting a load out of TN going to Carson, CA. Thunder, a 12 yr black Lab, and Cheyenne quickly began the best of buddies once Cheyenne got it through Thunders thick skull she wasn't interested in any hankypanky. An excited receiver, Jennifer C, met them in Hesperia, CA. Faith, the 8 year old daughter of Jennifer, did not know until that time, Cheyenne was her birthday gift. Toro became instantly became protective of the truck and growled when the receiver's little girl approached at their meeting place in Hamburg, PA. Once out of the truck though, Toro went up to her with his tail wagging, thus alleviating her fears. Kris reports the receiver's other dogs got along except for their older female. Becky, the shipper, made the trip from Ottawa, KS, to Joplin, MO, to bring us Toro on 2/18/10. She had worked all day and then made the 5 hour round trip that night. Toro is an energetic young pup. He is very playful and loves attention. We kept him with us for a day and a half before starting our trip toward New York City, NY. My 7 y/o Poodle, Little Joe, did not care for Toro too much but as with all transports he dealt with it. The night before we left Joplin, Toro dug up what might be a human knee bone outside our hotel room. We turned the bone over to the police for further investigation. What a Dog!! We left MO on 2/20/10 and started our trip East. Toro was not real sure about the truck and found it hard to sit still. The first couple of times, when it came time to walk him, it was a real chore getting him out of the truck. When Toro didn't want to do something, he would fight you to all ends. This dog was only 55 pounds and it took both my wife, Brandy, and I to get him in and out of the truck...and I'm no light weight. After the first two times walking him, he started to get out on his own as long as we didn't rush him. We delivered Toro to his new Mommy in Hamburg, PA, on the morning of 2/21/10. Toro, from what I have learned, will be an addition to their family which is good as he is very playful and wants to be a big buddy to another dog. Lyric, a pet of Moran M, was traveling to Moran's grandfather, Tony O. The report on this transport is a little different in that Sue put the day-to-day, if not the hour-to-hour, news on a special website linked below. All involved in the transport were able to follow Lyric's travels. This couple, knowing they did not normally go to Texas, took him on board anyway and hoped for a repower with another driver. While this was attempted, Tony is an expediter and moves around the Eastern area very quickly so it made it hard for other drivers to cross with him, although many tried. Chris D, All Ears Basset Sanctuary, agreed to see this was done. When the application came in, Operation Roger Coordinator, Sue W, realized one of her new drivers was in the right place, at the right time, and going the right direction. Hurried arrangements were made with Sally, Southern Pines Animal Shelter, who got Melody's health certificate and drove to Gulfport to meet Driver David and his wife Melody P, all within just hours. From minute one, David & Melody fell in love with sweet Melody. Yes, the names are right. This was David & Melody's first transport and one they won't quickly forget. Smart and quickly adjusting to the truck, Melody seems to have been a truck dog at one time. Also, originally thought to be 9 years old, she is actually a lot younger at about 4 years, according to the vet who issued the health certificate. The vet also found Melody had other worms. An experienced raiser of dogs, this development didn't faze David at all and he eagerly took on the responsibility of doing whatever was needed by Melody enroute to NM. Melody arrived in Las Cruces, NM, where she was met by Mike S, who in turned drove north toward Albuquerque to meet Chris, who was driving south. Checking on her later, David & Melody learned Melody had already been seen by a vet. In January Driver Dean F saw an article about Operation Roger on a TA Truck Stop restaurant menu and called. As it turned out, he was heading to Orange, CA. Lisa was notified and quickly gathered all of Cashew's things together and drove an hour north to meet him at his receiver. According to Dean, he quickly fell in love. It didn't take long for little Cashew to twist Dean around her little paw. Cashew would curl up at night next to his shoulders. She would sit on his lap while he was driving and look out the window at the passing scenery. Other drivers often commented on his little charge. When the time came, Dean met the adoptive family in Hoxie, AR. All four children were also there.. Cashew was excited and obviously happy to be a part of the family. For his part, Dean admitted to a tearful goodby to his little traveling companion and even said he would wake up during the nights following to look for her. Cashew became the first pet to be picked up in 2010 and the first to be delivered. Good Evening - I just wanted to take a minute to thank Operation Roger for a wonderful service! Our trucker driver (Dean) was very accomodating and pampered our puppy! It was his first trip with Operation Roger and he did an excellent job! Cashew (puppy) travelled from California to Arkanas, and they both will always remember each other. Thank you so much!
